Mazda Telematics - What is it?

Let me get this straight - you pay them to collect data on you and your passengers because they offer you a few options that most people don't really need anyway.

I didn't, when it expired I never paid a dime, and unlike many things ie XM radio and other subscriptions where you get bombarded with renewal offers I did not receive a single renewal offer from Mazda..I got an initial notice saying when the last day was and never got another notification.
Even if you don't subscribe after the free period doesn't Mazda continue to collect info on you and your driving habits? I think I recall some posters having to call Mazda to disable that part.

probably but does not bother me. I have a jeep that does the same only they give you 10 years free and I have an iphone etc. I am not worried about being spied on.
I had an interesting experience yesterday at the Mazda dealership. I took my CX-5 in for a routine oil change and tire rotation and got a surprise.
As background, I detest data collection and vehicle monitoring and have done 3 things to avoid it;
1. DID NOT allow the salesman to set up a connected services account when I bought the car.
2. Turned off connected services in the car's computer.
3. Called Mazda to disable the modem.
Ok. Back to the oil change story. The service guy told me that there is a re-programming recall on my car and he'll happily take care of it for me during the oil change. Most people would just say "Thanks," but I told him, "Sure, as long as they don't re-activate the telematics." He sheepishly looked down and said that he will add a comment that I refused the recall. As it turned out, the 'recall' was specifically and only to restore the connected services!
Apparently, Mazda issued this FAKE recall for my car and attempted to re-activate the telematics WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE OR PERMISSION! This is unbelievably slimy. They think that they own the car, but they don't, including MY DATA. WTF??!!!

2025. Yep. Very sketchy. I think that official recalls are safety-related and involve NHTSA reporting?
Yes, I agree. I'm not the type to bend over just because I can't avoid every way that they track us. I do what I can and encourage others to do the same.

Hi again! I have new information that clarifies what I learned at my oil change appointment! The recall that I was informed about is CSP-04. Apparently, if you call Mazda and opt - out of all data collection, they issue CSP-04 to your VIN. This is NOT an order to re-activate the system, rather it is simply a flag to inform dealers that connected services have been de-activated at customer request. I have communicated this back to my service rep so that he can correct his understanding and adjust his advice to his customers. In the end, Mazda has honored my request and HAS NOT attempted anything underhanded, restoring my faith in them!
