Help - I can't get into my car

The idea isn't to charge the battery (though in theory I think you could) but to provide enough current to power the systems which would allow you to use the fob to unlock the doors. Then you can get the hood open. I haven't done it myself but it should be possible. But given that you should get a key made anyway, it's best to just go that route.

I didn't. I jacked the car up and took off the lower cover. I tried to charge the battery via the starter connection but it didn't work for me. The local service shop has something they think can unlock it. I guess I'll know tomorrow morning.
Hope you have restored access!!

I got the started and moved. A guy from the local garage got it open for me. The battery was actually shorted or near shorted. I think applying voltage to the + starter lug would have worked if the battery was just dead and not shorted.
Get the key cut.

I intend to. I called the closest Mazda dealer (a two hour drive) and they said it would be $54. I intend to do that next week.
ACE or Home depot etc can cut the key blank..you can even have a regular key cut and zip tie it to the bottom of your vehicle etc for emergency if you lock yourself out. no way should it be $54 to cut the blank.

They can only duplicate an existing key. If you don't have a key, then the dealer is the only option (by looking up the VIN).

Also, Home Depot will now only cut a key if they have their own compatible blank. It's all by computerized machine, not like the old days :( Most Ace (and other indy hardware stores), still have the manual duplicators though.

oops, I had a brain fart about not having an existing key to copy.
