Brake pedal vibration when stopped. Worse when in reverse

2025 Mazda CX-5. 7,000 miles

I am feeling vibration in the brake pedal. I dont feel it while braking to a stop. I feel it while the car is at a complete stop.

I also feel it, much more intensely, when the car is in reverse. again, only while the car is not moving. If you drive in reverse then come to a complete stop, while your foot is still on the brake pedal and the gear is still in reverse, you feel it even more than before, and you can also hear a faint grinding/padder sound coming front the front of the car.

I do not feel vibration in the steering wheel or seats, just the brake pedal.

started a few months ago.

took the car to the dealer. they said its normal, and there is nothing to fix.

I call BS.
So, (according to dealer) you should be able to walk over to any new cx5 on the line and it'll do the same 🤔.

Hm.

I'm no mechanic or service tech, so this is decidedly from a long-time end-user perspective ...

To be sure we understand this: the issue seems to be strictly when you're in gear; doesn't appear to occur when the vehicle is moving (though you've mentioned Reverse only RE moving); and, the vibration is felt through the pedal and the "grinding" sound is heard coming from the front region of the car.

Might be interesting to know whether all gears exhibit, and whether Neutral or Park exhibit. To further isolate, I would suggest trying all the gears. Shouldn't take but 3mins or so:

  • Start the car, gear in Park, electronic brake on (so car not moving of course), no foot on the brake pedal -- Do you feel a vibration or hear the grinding sound?
  • Press down on the brake pedal -- Do you feel the vibration?
  • Move the gear to Neutral, leaving the electronic brake on, foot on brake pedal -- Vibration, noise?
  • Move the gear to Reverse, electronic brake on, foot on brake pedal -- Vibration, noise?
  • Move the gear to D(rive), electronic brake on, foot on brake pedal -- Vibration, noise?
  • Move to M(anual), electronic brake on, foot on brake pedal -- Vibration, noise?
  • Can you feel the vibration through any other part of the car, or strictly only via the brake pedal?
  • Might be worth trying both with and without the heat/AC on, versus off, as the HVAC equipment does move fluids and can have noises, though I'd be surprised if vibration could occur unless something were severely wonky with the A/C.
  • With the gear in D(rive), release the parking brake, then let it coast forward -- Vibration, noise? If you place your foot moderately on the brake pedal but still allow a bit of forward motion, do you feel any vibration or hear that noise?

Might be interesting to take another couple of CX-5's off the lot for test drives, then perform this specific combination of tests. I'd write all of the results down. Then compare the results for your car and the others. At minimum, then, you'd know whether yours seems to have a unique condition. And you'd then be able to show the Mazda service/tech people specifically what you have found.

If there's an actual grinding/pattering noise you can hear in the cabin, I would think that a any tech ought to be able to isolate using a stethoscope (or other audio-type) device ... engine, transmission, transfer case, differential, some other part.
