Common issues with 2022 CX-5? Extended Warranty Needed?

For the 22 CX5, is it worth extending the warranty? Were there some issues with the engines at one point? I know about the thermostat warranty extension to 15 years. But trying to see if it is worth extending the warranty for about $1300-1700. Mostly I would be worried about engine and powertrain failures that are costly, not so much minor things.

Kinda depends if you plan on keeping it past the Powertrain warranty of 5yrs/60,000 miles.

I bought the Mazda extended warranty on our 19 due to the turbo cracked head issue. Couple months after I purchased the warranty Mazda issued the extended warranty for the head issue. Since I plan on keeping the 19 for another year or two I'll see if it was worth it or not.

Probably not but it's peace of mind.

Edit: Haven't heard really any problems with the 22's but it's still early in the game. NA's had the oil leak and turbo's have the coolant leak indictive of head cracks. Supposedly Mazda fixed both but most of the problems don't show up for a couple years.

My two cents here:

My view on any sort of insurances and warranties is:
When the worst happens, can you withstand the hit w/o incurring much pain financially?
If yes, no insurance or warranty is needed.
If no, please do it as a safety net for you and your love ones.

The threshold differs from person to person.
One should make one's own call based on one's financial status.
Don't simply follow what others do.

BTW, I have a '22 CX-5 Turbo. It has been great since new.

I guess what I'm after is this....I recall there were some initial issues with the cylinder deactivation (not sure what year) and I thought some engine failures on the NA CX5, but I could be wrong. I have not kept up with thing. Was hoping some of the historians on this site would chime in.

If there are common engine/power train issues in the CX5, then it would make sense to get the extended warranty. I don't think many people buying a Mazda can afford to take a major hit for a engine failure or tranny.

There were some early issues with CD around 2019 and 2020 but Mazda seems to have cleared that issue up. Haven't heard any problems in the last couple years.

There's been posts about cracked cylinder heads but they've been basically pre 2020's. Haven't seen much on vehicles post 2020. Have not seen any transmission problems. There was a bad batch of transmissions on the 2016 models but the failure was pretty quick, within the first year or two and Mazda replaced them under warranty.

So if I owned a 2022 CX-5 I wouldn't be too worried about a major problem.

its not just powertrain but also with so much electronics in cars nowadays. Infotainment screen goes out and $2000. Headlight goes out and its $2000 (there is tsb for defective headlights), etc

Good point. That's why after Mazda issued the warranty extension on the cyclinder head crack I decided to keep my extended warranty, just in case. Saturday my infotainment on my 16 starting acting up. You just never know whats going to fail and how much it's going to cost.

Where did you hear that Thermostat warranty is extended to 15 years? Nobody gives such warranty on anything I know of. Which country is this car for?

After 3 years, the electronics (modules, sensors, infotainment center, radio, etc) could be costly to repair or diagnose without some kind of 3rd party warranty.

On the CX5 with cylinder deactivation which has potentially fault electronically managed thermostat / valve. See attached notice. Its for a North America, not sure about other like Europe.


Its not unheard of.. such campaigns. Bmw has it, Mercedes and others too - for some modules in their cars.

Haa, the trick wording is "...if your the recipient of this noice, your vehicle is included...". I have a 2022.5 Mazda Cx-5 Signature Turbo in Canada, and I got NO notice, so may car is not covered. It looks like some models, maybe none turbos are different from turbo models, I don't know. But interesting.

Haa, the trick wording is "...if your the recipient of this noice, your vehicle is included...". I have a 2022.5 Mazda Cx-5 Signature Turbo in Canada, and I got NO notice, so may car is not covered. It looks like some models, maybe none turbos are different from turbo models, I don't know. But interesting.

Note, I don't not have X5 with cylinder deactivation on 2022.5 Signature Turbo. I know they had some problems as per my dealer was telling me, about X5 with cylinder deactivation. Maybe the thermostat extended warranty applies to these cars with cylinder deactivation, who knows.

Only for non-turbo models - yes.
The turbo has traditional thermostat (mechanical).
They have a TSB for the thermostat and have the details for the dealers to follow.

Turbo models do not have CD, and non-turbo base trims up to about '23 do not have it either.

I have just checked for Mazda recalls using VIN at their website, and there has never been any recalls on my model of cx-5 turbo. Solid auto so far.

Turbo models are not subject to this. Only NA models with cylinder deactivation, because they use a different type of thermostat. Also, it is not a recall, but a warranty extension.

Mine has CD but I did not receive a letter in the mail. However, my dealer was aware of it when I had it in for this very issue last month.

So, a 2021 2.5NA cx-5 with CD would be eligible for a warranty extension?
