I bought brand new Mazda CX5 -2016 AWD. Till now it ran only 30K miles. When a puncture happened, tyre centre told me that its time to change the tyre.
I was surprised. Then I called Mazda and they told that brand new car tyres will last only 30K miles. Is that true guys ?

I live in North California. Daily use of 10miles for commute to work. Occasionally I go for some long high way trip. But majority of my usage is short commutes
I plan to use this car for another 5 more years

I am looking to get Michelin tyres. These are the options
  1. Michelin - Primacy All Season

  2. Michelin - Latitude Tour HP

  3. Michelin - Defender T + H

  4. Michelin - X Tour A/S T + H

Could you please suggest which one meets my requirements ?

My OEM Toyo tires were down to 3-4/32nds when I replaced them at less than 24k miles. Few have reached over 30k. There is a thread on this topic if you care to look for it.

IMHO Michelins are nice but overpriced. Many here are quite happy with Continental LX-25’s, including me. See several threads on which tire people chose in this topic.

Whatever tire you choose, shop hard for the lowest price and then allow Discount Tire to match that price. Their service, warranty and nationwide presence makes them tops in the business. I bought Continentals and Blizzaks/rims from them and get free seasonal bolt-ons for the life of the tires.

Some old discussions:

Best All-Season Michelin 225/55R19 Tires?

I used to get only Michelin tires but after several disappointing incidents, 2 blowouts and one set of tires with sidewall dry rot, I started to look for more on different tire brands based on specs and reviews.

In addition, car manufactures would want to use higher tire pressure for better fuel efficiency. Newer tires designed by tire manufactures are all featuring higher maximum inflation pressure at least to 51 psi. But Michelin keeps offering most new tires to US market with 44 psi old design.

Here are specs and prices on tires you’re interested and 2 popular tires by forum members on 225/55R/19 from Tire Rack for comparison:

Based on UTQG alone Michelin CrossClimate² is out IMO with B rating on Traction. It’s a shame for Michelin coming out a B rated Traction on UTQG with such a high-price tag!

Michelin Premier LTX has been criticized heavily on short tread life, but Michelin Primacy Tour A/S has even lower 540 Treadwear UTQG than Premier LTX’s 620. We can almost guarantee the tread life on Primacy Tour A/S will be shorter than Premier LTX.

Here’re Tire Ratings Charts from Tire Rack on tires CX-5 uses:

You may find high ratings on some newly released tires such as Michelin CrossClimate² and Michelin Primacy Tour A/S on 225/55R19. But both of them have minimum miles (~300K) accumulated on Tire Rack reviews, most people wouldn’t really know the true treadwear and might give it a high rating. Once more miles are used, the poor treadwear on Michelin CrossClimate² and Michelin Primacy Tour A/S would get exposed from their relative low UTQG treadwear ratings. That’s exactly what happened on Michelin Premier LTX. The rating was #1 on the chart at beginning, but it keeps dropping especially on treadwear which is only 4.9 out of 10 with 13M miles accumulated. And if you notice, Tire Rack has listed Michelin Premier LTX as close-out item.

With all things considered, I’m not going to choose any Michelin 225/55R19 tires, especially they all have highest price tags.

You didn’t say what is the trim level of your 2016 CX-5 AWD or it has 17” or 19” tires. Assuming you have a GT with 225/55R19 tires, stock Toyo A23’s on your 2016 CX-5 have “300 A A” UTQG, which means the tread life is about 30,000 miles.

225/55R19 Tire Comparison Table for CX-5 GT - Many to Choose From - Post #76

You didn’t say what is the current tread depth of yours but many tire shops would tell you to get a new set of tires with 4/32” tread depth, which still has a long way to reach the 2/32” legal limit with the wear bar showing up on the tread. My A23’s on my 2016 CX-5 had lasted 44,032 miles with 3/32” ~ 2/32” tread left.

I personally will not stick with overpriced Michelin tires like I used to be, unless the price is competitive. If I want name-brand tires for my CX-5, Continental CrossContact LX25 or General AltiMAX RT43 would be my choice as they’re 2 favorites by many forum members:

You can use the rating charts to find the tires you prefer by performance from different areas:

Tire Rack 225/55R19 Tire Ratings Charts

If you really want the Michelin tires, any one listed should be fine for your next 5 years / 30,000 miles driving in the NorCal.

And by these Michelin tires you listed, it seems you have a 2016 CX-5 Touring / Sport with 225/65R17 tires as 3 out of 4 models don’t offer 225/55R19?

Sorry I missed the title says 225/65R17. A partial list of comparison table here:

225/65R17 Comparison Table

From the table your stock Yokohama Geolandar G91A P225/65R17 100H has very poor “280 B A” UTQG, 28,000 miles is the expected tread life.

Here's Tire Ratings Charts from Tire Rack for Crossover/SUV touring all-season 225/65R17 tires:

The comments on Continental CrossContact LX25 or General AltiMAX RT43 for 235/65R17 still applies.

Among the 4 listed on Michelin’s, I’d avoid any B ratings on UTQG, such as “820 A B” on Michelin Defender T+H、”540 B A” on Michelin Primacy A/S.

Thank you for the table. this helps 😀
I was looking at Michelin because I thought of buying at Costco. Yea the price is ~$175 for Michelin
Now After seeing the table #1, Continental cross contact makes me to look at AmericanTyres.com and shop near me. But I trust Costco service.

How/from where do you guys find lowest price and check with local tyre dealer to beat that price ?
Any tips and tricks ? Thinking whether is it worth to go outside costco or not.

I was literally in the same boat as you back in June. I had a damaged tire after work and needed some tires the next day. The most convenient tire shop was at Costco so I settled for the X-Tour AST which supposedly is the Costco's exclusive version of the Defender T+H. I haven't had any issues so far.

Thumbs up for Altimax 43.
Good reviews on consumer reports, tire rack and multiple other sites and forums. Except for the cross-climate, agree with yrwei that all Michelin tires are overpriced and over-praised. I run all-terrains but if I was getting an allseason, it would be that Altimax 43 or the Altimax 365 allweather. If you decide on all terrain, the Firestone destination AT2 or the Falken AT trails are good choices. Good luck. Oh and if not Michelin cross-climate, get Nokians for winter tires.

As far as stock, bought used 2018 cx5 with 17k miles on it and toyos were down to almost 6/32 tread from previous owner. At 21 k miles, switched out for Nokian Winters. And toyos they were down to almost 4/32.

As I mentioned before, my usage is 10 miles commute a day in northern California ( Sacramento) where summer dry weather is more days , no snow , some rains conditions. Currently I am getting 22 Mpg in city driving area . I will be continue driving in city area for commutes with frequent traffic lights , stops.

Actually I use Discount Tire Store (America's Tire in NorCal) over Costco all the time as DT has better tire installation and balancing Hunter machines, more nation-wide service centers available for any tire services including "free" lifetime tire balancing and flat repair, and will do price-match to Costco's or any online tire stores.

Based on UTQG alone Michelin tires are not that superior with much higher prices. I wouldn't want any tires in UTQG with B rating on Traction or Temperature. And I prefer the maximum inflation pressure on tires with today's standard at 51 psi. Don't just choose high treadwear UTQG tires as you may not be able to use that much miles when the tire age reaches to 10 years and no tire stores would service such old tires.

so I am inclining towards LX25 as my car is CX5 Touring AWD
to confirm, this is the item right ? Discount Tire | Tires and Wheels for Sale | Online & In-Person

Also I see there are installation charges at AmericanTyre.com. Any idea whether they waive it ?
Do you think there will be any sales going on as part of november thanksgiving offers ?
I checked a bit and didn’t see any specials on Continental’s right now. Discount Tire Direct, the online store from Discount Tire, sometimes offers “Flash Sale” usually $110 off and you just have to watch the site.

Flash Sale Continental CrossContact LX25 - $171.50 Each

And the local Discount Tire Stores will do price-match to any tire store prices and online prices, including DT Direct. Continental usually offers $70 gift card 2 ~ 3 times per year, and you can keep checking the Continental site or Tire Rack.

All tire stores, Discount Tire or Costco, will have installation charge with the new tire purchase. There’s additional “certificate” which is the road hazard insurance. For Discount Tire, the Installation includes new valve stem (your 2016 CX-5) or “repair kit” for those with TPMS sensors on the valve stem (2017 and newer CX-5) 、lifetime flat repair、tire rotation and balancing、and nation-wide network for all of those free tire services. Certificate, which I usually decline, is to cover any tire damage beyond repair. You can see the price breakdown in this post:

I didn't get very good miles out of my OEM Toyos. I reached out to Mazda and they had me contact Toyo. They connected with my local DT and got me the $256 tire credit and there was a $50 (or so) General (RT43s) Tire MIR that I got. I was happy with the out the door price. Been going to DT since the mid 80s.

Today I'm going back to replace my General RT43s. They're at 4/32s. Here's how this one is laid out for the Continental LX25s. Curious to compare them to the Generals. These concrete roads chew up tires quicker I think.

$796.00 Continental CrossContact LX25s (4)

I waited and looks like there are no offers at American tires for LX-25.
I see Bridgestone offer $150 off is going on in Bridgestone now. Alenza and Turanza are available which are rated high as per above table. I see Turanza is in grand touring table. Is there any issue if I use that for touring ? Mine is 2016 CX5 touring .?

I imagine America’s Tire (Discount Tire) in Bay Area should have some sort of Black Friday sale coming up. But for now (by Nov. 22nd) if you want to take advantage of Bridgestone’s $120 gift card rebate, Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra 225/65R17 102H would be my choice. If you want to get this tire from America’s Tire, they may have to order the tire since it’s new. And don’t forget to ask for price match to Costco or Tire Rack’s, if AT’s price is higher. And I’d also skip the certificate (road hazard replacement insurance) from AT but that’s the choice of yours.

I think $120 gift card offer is not alenza ultra . Link is Discount Tire | Tires and Wheels for Sale | Online & In-Person

Am I looking at wrong place ?
The $120 gift card is the manufacture rebate. The Bridgestone website says “Eligible tires for the $120 reward: All Alenza™ products.”:

GET UP TO $150 BACK BY MAIL ON A BRIDGESTONE VISA® PREPAID CARD

You can also see the said rebate at Tire Rack website under Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra 225/65R17 102H.

As I said earlier, you won’t be able to find Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra at Discount Tire / America’s Tire website as it’s too new. You need to call or stop by a DT / AT store directly and ask them to order a set of Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra 225/65R17 102H. They’ll order it and usually it takes a day. Don’t forget the price match with them.

Continental has rebates until Nov 30 th. You could look on continentals website and see if there is an alternative tire you like that has the rebate.
The Continental Tire prepaid card rebate going on now doesn’t include Continental CrossContact LX25:

Get a $70 Visa® Prepaid Card with the purchase of 4 qualifying passenger Continental Tires!* Now through 11/30

You can easily to verify any rebate availability at Tire Rack website on the tire you’re interested in.
