Mazda CX-9 No sound from Tweeters (bose speakers)

Hi
I have recently purchased CX-9 2017 with Bose sound system. I have been feeling a lack of higher frequency to the point that I have to set the treble to the max and bass to -3 to really have that clarity in the sound (I still feel that i need to go a few notches more to have that clarity in sound).

I opened up the right side dash grill to see what sort of speaker is fitted there. There is a 3.25in mid-range and a 1in Tweeter (in the grill). I realised that there is no sound from the tweeter. Since the mid-range speaker is right next to it therefore it is really difficult to listen to the tweeter in isolation but i don't hear any sound when facing it right towards my ear (getting the ear very close to twitter is really difficult while it is connected since the space is really tight and cable is not long enough). Disconnected the speaker and it didn't result in any change in the sound. Also, i don't feel any vibration when touch the back of the speaker. This leads me to believe that there is no sound coming out of front tweeters (there is no change in sound moving the balance from right to left).

I took it to Mazda dealer, they ran their tests and said there is no issue with the speakers or the sound. I tried convincing them but they said that they have run the tests that the Mazda manual requires them to run but didn't find any issue. Took it up with Mazda further (as this could be design issue) and they came back with the argument that since the dealer has run the tests and haven't identified any issue therefore they can't do anything. I have argued that they need to demonstrate me the sound coming out of the tweeters only. They will ask the dealer to demonstrate the test to me but they said that it will be entirely up to the dealer whether they agree or not. They are yet to come back.

Could someone please confirm if you are facing the same issue. I am assuming that there might be a design issue here and the tweeter is just there as a dummy. Is there such a test to produce sound from each speaker separately? Any other suggestions?

It could be blown. Unhook the 3½", and listen again.

Also, since the car is out of warranty, there's no reason to take it to the stealership to fix the stereo. Take it to a car audio specialist shop instead.

Put the fader on full to the front and balance to the right, then block the door speakers?

The sub is in the center of your spare tire. It isn’t one of Bose’s best efforts…buzzy & boomy. Disconnect it, disconnect the 3.5”, play something with obvious high frequencies, and hear what’s there.

An easy fix for the sub is to cover the surfaces with an adhesive damping material. Any auto sound shop I’ll sell you some. You can also open the sub and add some poly stuffing to help the sound quality, but damping the buzziness is the biggest fix.

I just did the test after unhooking the 3.25" mid range speaker, change fader to front and balance to the right. There is still some sound coming from the centre speaker but I am sure there is no sound from the tweeter as it should be very obvious.
The fact that I am ruling out a blown speaker is that the same phenomenon is happening with the left side speaker as well. I will be surprised if both the tweeters have blown. Is there any way to find out ?

I would like to know if any one else is facing that issue. I am trying to exclude the possibility of a design flaw. May be they have delivered a 10 speaker system instead of 12 which is more of CX-5 sound system. The tweeters are there as a dummy.

On another thought, since I recently got Apple Carplay installed, is there a possibility that they installed firmware of CX-5 instead of CX-9 which has rendered the tweeters unusable. Or is the firmware generic for all MZD Connect ? Here is the snapshot of currently installed OS version...

Maybe you could either attach a known good speaker or test your speaker with a known good source.

I think the center speaker is the same as the others.

If you have a meter...Disconnect one or both wires to the tweeter. Set the meter to read resistance, the ohms setting, omega symbol Ω, try something like a 200 Ω setting, and briefly touch one probe to each of the speaker connections to test the continuity of the coil in the speaker. Any reading is good. No reading, or the infinity symbol ∞, indicates that the speaker is indeed blown. Test your meter skills on something else in advance, a good incandescent light bulb or anything handy. Touch one meter probe to one end of a disconnected circuit, then touch the other and see the reading. We aren't looking for the value, just to see if the circuit has continuity.

After going back and forth with Mazda and the dealership, they finally admitted that the tweeters were faulty and replaced them. All covered under warranty. I suspect they went faulty by them during the installation of car play.
I will now apply that subwoofer fix suggested by PTguy.

Thanks all
