Hi Guys. Just performed the first oil change for my 2021 CX-30 Turbo @ 1390 miles. Overall it's very simple. I found it less messy than my Wife’s previous 2011 MX-5 Miata. I purchased 6 Filters and washer/gasket from Avondale Mazda for less than $60 shipped. The filter I used is the made in Thailand 1 WPY 14 302. The one that came off is Japan made Roki PY8W 14 302 which is no longer available in US.

Mazda’s fluid quantities listed in owner’s manual are notorious for inconsistencies. It needs 5.25 quarts instead of specified 4.8 quarts for oil and oil filter changes on my 2.5L to make the oil level to be at Full / Max mark of the dipstick. How much oil did you use on your 2.5T for the oil change? It can’t be 5.1 quarts as specified in owner’s manual?
If you’re willing to do a UOA on your factory oil, you’ll find very high content of molybdenum (600 ~ 700) in there which Honda uses it too as the factory break-in oil and warns the owners don’t change the factory oil early specifically said in the owner’s manual. I personally changed the moly-rich factory oil a bit earlier at 5,000 miles with Mazda moly 0W-20 oil.
Although many people like you use Shell Retolla, but for some reason I can’t get over the “truck / diesel oil” image associated with Retolla since early days.

It's just an old habit. I've always change oil(First) in all the 20 plus new vehicles at around 1k mile. I will go back to the norm twice a year spring and fall for the CX30 in Oct/Nov. I would guess the motor was overfill according to the dip stick from factory. It was like 1/8 above the TOP DOT. I read w/filter change is 5.1 QT and 4.9 QT w/o Filter replacement. What i did was put in an even 5QT and check and see. Right now the oil level is at above the half way point of the two dots. I used RGT in my 2018 2.7 Ecoboost F150 as well and i use M1 in the 2018 Mustang GT. It was whichever oil is the cheapest for the CX30. I picked up some RGT cheap last year and that is what i used.

So you don’t use “Flexible” OCI recommended by Mazda which depends on your driving conditions up to 7,500 miles or 12 months whichever comes first?
In CX-5 forum 2.5T owners claim the engine oil is overfilled from factory like you observed. Strangely we found the engine oil is about ¼ below the Max / Full mark from the factory on the 2.5L.
If you use specified 5.1 quarts, it won’t reach the Max mark of the dipstick, just like my 2.5L if I use the specified 4.8 quarts. You can keep addling oil gradually until the oil level reaches the Max mark. But looks like you need about 0.35 ~ 0.45 quart more than specified 5.1 quarts to get to the Max mark.
If I had a 2.5T, this’s the type of oil I’d use with new SP / GF-6 standard. Other than better fuel economy、preventing low-speed pre-ignition、and many other benefits, it provides much better timing chain protection.from GF-6 oil.
The oil change interval for the CX-30 and 2019+ Mazda3 are now at 10k miles or 1 year (or when the indicator comes on).

Yes, you’re correct. What I said is based on the CX-5 with the same engines. Apparently Mazda3 and CX-30 come with a newer maintenance monitor system and have different setups, even though the engines are all the same between Mazda3 / CX-30 and CX-5.

I don't follow OCI. Never have never will. My Wife and i simply don't drive a lot. She put less than 1k miles on the CX30 and we had it since April. Like i said before. I'm just old school.... Oil change is cheap and engine is expensive. For example. Our Mustang just turned 10300 miles give or take and i changed oil/filter 7 times since we got her, that is 70QTs of regular M1 5W20 and 7 Motorcraft FL500S filters. People think i'm crazy when i tell them i changed oil that many times on a vehicle that just have 10k miles.

If you drive that low miles, you should be fine change the oil once a year for less than 5K miles. This still meets Mazda’s recommended OCI if you set up the oil change in Maintenance Monitor to “Flexible”. The “Flexible” OCI should be the default from factory. By following that, you will avoid any consequences if any oil related problem comes up within 5-year / 60,000-mile powertrain warranty period. You still can change oil before the wrench indicator shows up calculated by the oil life monitor. And just reset it each time you change the oil. I usually change the oil earlier when oil life monitor shows 30% of oil life remaining on my 2016 CX-5, except last pandemic year. The wrench indicator was displayed for 12-month duration even though our CX-5 had only driven for 4,000 miles.
The “Flexible” OCI has been used in Europe and Asia for many years mainly for environmental concerns.
