Beating Walkaway

I have found that the walkaway locking doesn't work in the following scenario: I park the car. I get out and close the drivers door. I open the rear door and take out groceries etc. I close the rear door and walk back directly away from the rear of the vehicle. Some how the car doesn't recognize that I've left and doors remain open. I'm aware of the issue and make sure I manually lock the doors . In any other situation the doors lock as they should. Not a big issue but important to be aware if leaving expensive gear such as camera gear in the car.

I have always attributed that to the sensor perimeter area being larger near the side doors but smaller near the trunk. There was a graph somewhere on the distancing.

You would have to stay right next to the trunk and wait for it to fully close first. If you walk away before the trunk fully closes and move away quickly then the sensor loses signal from the key and it never auto locks the car.

There is a button on the hatch to the right of the open button that locks all the doors.

Auto-lock will only "prime" if the keyfob is in range of the proximity sensors when the last door is closed. This includes the liftgate/rear door.

I used to do that on my 2016 until the key fell out of my pocket on the floorboard. I did not know it and locked the key in the car.

I like the feature but haven't figured out the scenarios when it won't work, especially when getting something out of the back seat, that type of thing. I don't leave the area until I see the mirrors moving in.

On my CX-9, the range is about 2.5-3.5 ft from any of the doors. As an example of how the system works, my daughter sits in a car seat that is installed in the 2nd row, behind the front passenger seat. I put the car in Park, turn off the engine, then exit the vehicle. If the fob is detected in that 2.5-3.5ft range when the door closes, I hear the car beep, which tells me that the auto-lock system is primed. Now, if I walk around the back of the vehicle to get to the rear passenger door, the auto-lock does not lock the doors because the keyfob is still in range of the proximity sensors near the doors. However, if I walk around the front of the vehicle, the auto-lock will trigger and lock all doors because there are no proximity sensors at the front of the car.

Basically you just have to remain near the car when the last door closes, and listen for the beep. Then you walk away, and you should hear a second beep as soon as you take a few steps.

I hear ya, but there are times when it just doesn't seem to want to autolock even though I'm right there. Usually when fooling with opening/closing additional doors, to be true. I make sure to listen for the beeps (and watching the mirror) before leaving the area!
