US Diesel's big splash introduction

Man, I'm stunned by these mpg figures.
Maybe real world tests will fare better but to basically have it be equal to the gas engine is not exactly going to help them move inventory.

Plus, Chevy with their little 1.8 (?) is diesel is wayyyyy out ahead of Mazda on this one.

Xeler, you're right. I wonder how bad they had to gimp this engine to get it to pass US emissions that the fuel mileage tanked. Aren't EU guys reporting 35-40 on highway? (possibly with the smaller motor though)

:( your regulations are hampering fuel economy.

We have the full version of the 2.2 diesel - 140KW (188HP) / 450NM (332FTLBS) and we get the following figures:

City: 6.5L/100km (36.19 USmpg)
Highway: 5.2L/100km (45.23 USmpg)
Combined: 5.7L/100km (41.27 USmpg)

For comparisons sake, I've located the fuel consumption figures for the CX-5 in France (see red rectangle).

If you convert the figures to US MPG, they are still better than what your diesel is going to achieve.

Bear in mind, the top rated 2.2D is still the 175HP engine (pre Australian update) and you can also see the low output version as well.

They seem awfully fishy to me- I've been checking but missed because I was only looking at MY19- the fact that their introducing (apparently) as MY18 is also pretty damn odd at this stage..let's see what happens- for right now we're a step closer to wheels on the ground, and that (to me) is progress.

Yep for a person like you have been patiently waiting for this 2.2L SkyActiv-D, these EPA diesel FE estimates, although they're disappointing, are indeed a big progress. The GM of my Mazda dealer has been telling me that he has sent his mechanics to Mazda for training to service the diesel engine. This's another good sign Mazda diesel should come eventually.

With a such low FE estimates, I wonder if the horsepower and torque are also reduced for US market.

Unfortunately ...underwhelmed by the MPG estimates.. I had hoped for so much more. Will HCCI beat the diesel MPG? I realize not the torque though...

I'll say this until I'm adblue in the face..more power + more efficiency = winning
Where all the data shakes out remains to be seen which will answer the question- but is it worth it? I understand that for many(maybe even for me) the answer may very well be no.

Youre gonna owe me a case.

It would be cool to hear it gets massively better MPG than what is being reported in real life use.

+10% is my baseline guesstimate hwy number ie 33- solid but likely doesn't qualify as massive.. I think they wanted to convince us more via effortless performance than all out FE(and again that's more than just 0-60) but big easy torque at the ready that smaller NA gas engines just can't duplicate (yet anyway) that make driving it a joy..the glk250 was that car..I shot it down because of high cost and it didn't get great FE either but what a great motor. It came down to throw in a few years of maintenance and I'll do it- same old codger(nice guy actually remembered me) I bought my C230 from 11 years prior..he 'couldn't' do and I bought the CX-5- which was for the best as I didn't love the GLK- but it had a hell of a good engine in it.

^That is altogether possible especially if it doesn't handily overachieve epa/impress with it stoutness. Silver lining is patience may equal heavy discounts...and I'm nothing if not patient;)

I know most wouldn't buy it as a modest tow vehicle.. but definitely capable with listed specs. It would tow things my '15 would struggle with.

Any chance they could up the tow rating with a stock brake controller? I know... it's a real reach there.... I really wanted to hear 40 MPG.
