Where Is Mazda Headed Next?

I am holding off my purchase because I want that 2.5T. it just doesn't make sense for such a small company to develop a new engine and only put it in their low volume model.

Not going to happen anytime soon re 2.5T

As for new SkyActiv X, it will gradually be added to models but has to start somewhere and the next generation 3 is the first to get it

I think Mazda is losing sales by not having a turbo. They positioned the CX-5 as a sporty, fun to drive option, and a near luxury option. Basically, it is designed to appeal to buyers who are going to be more interested in engine performance than most. Most of their competitors offer a higher output engine choice, and they sell well.

Mazda had a good opportunity to add the 2.5T to the CX-5 with the 2017 refresh, and I suspect it's not a simple drop-in job otherwise they would have done it. Now they're stuck trying bring the diesel to market and convince everyone that it's a performance option.

It is curious why they didn’t as David Coleman says it fits. My guess is the bosses over in Japan are opposed to the idea for some unknown reason.

Its a fairly complex engine that's having some issues in the CX9 as per CR..they didn't get into specifics but its apparently having some problems- 1 of 5 overall reliability rating now:( Mazda wisely (I think) kept it on the shelf (at least for now) and will instead try to appeal to the right side brain with good power and great efficiency with a more proven powertrain on their most important model. That is unless the EPA wears them down and they just roll in sky x in a the mid-cycle update.

Oooh we need more info on the issues with that 2.5T engine. Mazda did try out some new things with the turbo setup on that new engine, so I'm not surprised they're having issues.

Looking at forums here, can't see any issues being reported about the 2.5T

He also hated looking at it because there are a million of them around. He had a 1996 4 Runner with manual back in the day. Says getting rid of that ride was one of the biggest mistakes he ever made (traded it in for a V8 Ford Explorer.... which he didn't keep very long).

I had a 2001 4 Runner for about 9 or 10 years, and I liked it very much. I didn't like the next generation that started in 2003, and your 2012 is still using that platform. If you're happy with yours that's cool... I'm quite sure its fantastic off pavement.

He might have liked a GX but I wouldn't have bought one new either.

Actually 4Runner from '03-'09 is on the 120 series frame and '10+ is 150 Series. My GX shares the core frame with the 4Runner but a different body is used. 4Runner lost V8 with 150 series. The latter was probably more marketing than anything.

I’m getting a Golf R most likely in the next 12 months unless Mazda announces 3 with AWD and the 2.5T or SkyActiv X with similar power.

Earliest 2019 for Mazda 3 and just SkyAtiv X on top spec model(s). Existing SkyActiv engines will continue I believe

My ST is a ‘13 so I can wait a couple years if they confirm it. But the R is awfully tempting right now.

I take what Dave Coleman says with large grains of salt. I think there has to be a technical reason, because the newly refreshed CX-5 is already behind a lot of the competition on engine performance and that gap is only going to get bigger over the years until the next model is released.

I've been following multiple CX-9 forums and haven't seen too many issues with the current model. The previous model had significant problems, especially transfer case failures. It may be that CR's ratings reflect that. Back when I used to pay attention to CR, it seemed like their ratings would often lag.
