Help Me Decide: CX-5 vs. CR-V

Usually I agree, but not really this time. That line won't work with the officer. Nor will it work with doing nearly 20 under the speed limit.

That's up to you in the end.

Lots of people seem to be happy with how it performs. If it's not up to a persons expectations that is fine.

For me, because we here are so shackled with speed enforcement coupled with the lower speed limits etc, the CX-5's performance from any year (bar 2.0L) is more than enough for our conditions.

Yeah, I haven't had any instances where the Cx5 didn't have enough power for me. Now, there have been times where I wish it did. Simply for fun and to overtake some other vehicles, but I think the cx5 offers enough power to satisfy most drivers. If not, switch into sport. I know some dismiss that but I haven't found a user here that hasn't enjoyed it or felt it was useful.

For me the 2017 CX-5 I took for a test drive felt like an extension of my current Mazda6. In most instances, for me there was more than enough power. Of course I would like for it to have a little bit more but this is what we get and for me it's fine.

Oh yes, absolutely. Even though I have these awesome blind spot monitors that tell me it is safe to get in front of you, I still let you know I'm moving in front of you.

Uh, I don't think he used the (rofl) to laugh AT me for using signals. I think he was just laughing at how I phrases that. I am witty, ya' know. (rofl)

Could be worse. At least you're not in Adelaide.

85-90 is normal traffic speed on many of the roads I frequent. Posted limits are 85. Miles per hour. CX5 can't hack it. It's a great little city car though. For road-trips, it struggles and is horribly inefficient, I've found. Big let-down, that. At least it takes the cheap gas.
What? I am regularly looking down at my speedometer and realizing I am going 80+ and need to slow myself down. Without even trying.

I drove I-80 through Wyoming at above 100 regularly. While that was a little harder to do, it can do it.

Moreover I am probably at a higher elevation daily driving than most of you with this NA engine.

And while my city driving has gone up compared to my highway, I'm still getting between 26-27 mpg combined. If highway it's closer to 30+.

No sport mode switch either.

And while I am not aggressive, I am most definitely a spirited driver.

I don't get what the hell is wrong with your car Unob.

What other vehicle in this class (CRV, Rav4, ect) would NOT be horribly inefficient while cruising at 90MPH?

No, it really can't- its fairly light and fairly tall so definitely getting the kite effect at those speeds where the jeep just mows through the 1000 or so # lighter mazda just gets tossed. I think the new, lower to the ground (and yes heavier) CX5 will do somewhat better on the open road particularly the diesel.. Do you have a roof rack on, w/crossbars?

Not exactly in class but my RWD 8 speed X1 (while coming nowhere close to EPA 34 regardless of how hard I've tried) would likely still get 28-29 cruising on a flat low wind 90. I get that in mixed @80 hwy with some hills

Well that Jeep looks like a Hemi so it's 5.7L V8 with 20mpg hwy soooo yeah not the same.

Nothing is wrong with it. It's a weak 4-banger that strains its balls off at 80 and gets terrible mileage.

Mine definitely doesn't strain it balls off at 80- 90 maybe but that's reckless driving territory in my parts so it doesn't see 90 or even 85 much if ever. Mileage does seem to get almost exponentially worse with cruising speeds above 75-80. Kind of a tough auto equation for unob..he needs the ground clearance, wants both power and efficiency for 90ish on the highway (this is normal for 80-85 posted) on cheap gas.. Nothing in the class/price range really comes to mind that will do much better. CPO '14/'15 X1 (I put 89 in it or blend cheap and 93 depending) the AWD versions still have the good old hydraulic steering and get pretty good mileage even when flogged ie 80-90-100 spurts to easily school all those boring mainstream crossovers.. Why suffer?:)

The 2.0 XT Subaru gets 28mpg or so on road-trips at 80 per my friends who have them. I have not been in the car though, so I cannot personally vouch.

I had a feeling that car was going to come up again and honestly even though I'm not a fan personally and pretty shocked your friends are pulling 28 in it- it would have suited your need for speed (and let's face it at posted 85 you have a real need).. better.

**** me. As if on queue...

*Note: car was not struggling to do 81 (in a 60).

Man, if that isn't karma right there 7, I don't know what is.

Hey at least you can say you weren't going 55 in a 60 hogging the left lane with a whiny engine... ;)

Edit: But yeah, getting a ticket sucks. Sorry man :(

I do it every day... I knew it could. Long story, but the prosecutor for the city that this happened in is VERY nice to people who don't have a lot of tickets. This is my first in a LOOONG time. Probably get knocked down to a no point infraction. Still going to cost, though.
