I've become a fan of the Mazda controllers but I'm really wanting an Android Auto head unit (and something with a better NAV). I know the steering wheel controls can be used on aftermarket HUs but how about at least the volume controller? It would be nice to use both controllers but I would bet it is "purpose built" for Mazda... Anything out there as a "drop in" head unit?
Is there an aftermarket HU that can still use the Multi Commander??

Most of them are not compatible with commander.
The best solution (the one I am planning to buy) is an already upgraded to lollipop 5.1.1
There are one person who makes custom ROM for these units
They are branded MTC. Currently lollipop compatible hardware is the revision D (MTCD) but subbranded by others like joying (JY) klyde (KLD)....etc
The revision of software and mcu gives some information about the brand and subbrand.
Example:
MTCD_JY_1.63
Is the revision 1.63 for the JOYING MCU for the MTC revision D hardware.

Yikes, that is out of my league to figure out... Do you have info/link to the one you are considering? I am surprised to see a few listed that do include their own version of the commander...
As I have no commander I am considering two models:
10.1 cx5 5.1.1 Android from hotaudio (Check hotaudio store in aliexpress)
Or universal 2din 5.1.1 Android from hotaudio store
Now they are on sale and universal is only 185usd
As I had a pioneer 7inch 2din on my cx5 I have all the adapters I need for using the universal model and 10.1 inch perhaps is too big to use only as radio/music/gps only
