Well, as has been said everyone's view is subjective and I ws not bashing on the 5. Nor am I trying to jack the OP's topic. But, bottom line I currently own both the 5 and the CX-5. Both GTs and they are the current iterations, not models 5 or 6 years apart. They were both bought within 3 months of each other. Here's what I am saying by the CX-5 being a HUGE step up. The 5 is noisier (interior noise), harsher (ride, shifts), far more cramped in the front and of course the 3rd row, gets worse gas mileage even though it is lighter, does not have the option of AWD, the front seats are far less comfortable and the brakes are noticeably weaker. As was already noted the tech is much more outdated (not like the CX-5 is very advanced) and the 5 is not designed to tow. That said I ADORE the 5. I was the big proponent in my household for buying it. To my mind it is one of the best minivans on the market and should be on the shortlist of any family of four or less. It's handling is amazing, so easy to drive, parking is a breeze and it is definitely snappier feeling that the CX-5 although I would bet their acceleration is really about the same. You can tell there's a 3 (first gen) underneath there. I would not put much stock in the rumors of the 5 being discontinued as I have heard from plenty of salesman that the 5 is a strong seller in its own right it's just not huge volume which is fine as there hasn't been much investment in the platform since what? 2005? The reason the CX-5 is HUGE step up from the 5 is because it is a newer platform. Simple as that. I have no doubt that if the 5 gets moved over to the new 3's (I know 3, 6 and CX-5 are basically the same) platform the 5 would be just as compelling of vehicle as the CX-5. The sad truth is that CUV's are a hotter market than minivans. That is complicated by the fact that the 5 is the mighty mouse of that market it can't compete head on with the Odyssey, Town & Country, etc. So, my concern is the 5 may not get to keep being the mini-minivan which is one of the things that makes it so cool. Ok, threadjacking over.
