Button on liftgate

I'm a proud owner of a new CX-5 (GT), and I'm a little embarrassed that my first post has to be one of confusion.

I can't quite figure out what the button to the right of the electric liftgate opener does. I can't find it in the manual at all. It seems to result in a beeping, but I haven't been able to determine what the beeping accomplishes.

Any ideas? Thanks!

This button is discussed in the manual, I looked after fumbling with the button too.


For those with Advanced Keyless Entry System, the "request button" (to right on rear hatch) doesn't open/release hatch, it just unlocks everything. You still need to use center-mounted hatch release to open.

Note: Only Advanced Keyless Entry system has request button on hatch.

Now that you've had your CX-5 GT for a few days, what are your observations, any comments?

Wow, I didn't even know I *had* that button. How in the world did you see it? I guess I haven't gotten on my knees and looked up at it. All I thought I had was the center-mounted hatch release button. And I have been annoyed that that button doesn't unlock all the doors too. Well, you learn something every day. I'll have to go check out the request button when I get out of work tonight.

In my Australian Akera (advanced keyless entry), the button generates car lock type noises, but doesn't release door locks and I can't see anything else it does. Can anybody clarify what it is NOW intended to do?

I'm not trying to be a wise guy, but what does your owner's manual say (I'm in the U.S., so I'm sure there are differences between our manuals)?

I just discovered that as well. I was doing my ground level inspection and looking at things with a flashlight underneath and looked up to see that lock/unlock button.

OK, I just checked this out on my 2014 CX-5 GT w/tech, and this button will lock all doors, but will not unlock them. Check out page 3-9 in the OM. Again, this is a U.S. Mazda.

That just locks doors on mine as well.

This button is not mentioned in my Australian book and noise indicates it probably also locks my doors. Unfortunately, that is not much value to me since I have mine programmed to auto lock as soon as person carrying key moves away from doors which also includes rear hatch.

Actually, I've noticed on my '14 GT (US spec) that if you ONLY open the rear hatch (to put something in while shopping) but don't open a passenger door, the car will NOT automatically re-lock the rear hatch. I think that's why that button is there, to lock after opening just the hatch.

The button is only for locking. A one-way request button.

You sure? Lock all doors. With key fob on you, open and close only the rear hatch. Walk away, put fob down (or have someone else without fob) and then try opening the hatch. Should be locked.

That's my experience as well. Since the rear hatch auto-lock gives no confirmation horn or light, I tried it a bunch of times with a variety of scenarios to make sure I could trust it.

I just tried it, and you are correct in that the hatch locks. It doesn't make the comforting conformation 'beep' so I didn't really trust it. (There was also a member who's wife had problems with locking the rear hatch).

I hope the guy in the parking lot didn't think I was too weird walking around the back of my car, leaving my keys in different places... (whistle)
