2003 mazda protege 5
hello all, i have a 2003 protege 5 with 184k when put in park on a hill or slight incline car make ratching sound and will not hold as it rolls back, but if you pull ebrake before taking foot off brake in park and wiggle shiter handle it will stay fine. any help would be greatly appreciated. not sure if shifter assembly or cable.

This is common in autos, when u put the car park without brake the car will roll just a bit that you think it will just roll away. But it will stop, not to worry.

Try checking the brake caliper on the passenger rear side. My wagon does the same but that caliper is bad, its partially seized. I was unable to change out the pads last time I tried. It brakes under normal conditions (I can hear the worn pads making noise) but when I park if I don't press on the brake and pull the ebrake (almost full up, not all the way) it will also roll slightly until the transmission "grabs". If you can drive without much hesistation with the ebrake up, odds are something with that caliper is bad.

I do not think the OP's question sounds like issue with ebrake. Sounds more like "why won't it move a little and stop when in park instead of continuing to move making the ratcheting sound?"

Does this happen only when the car is facing uphill? Only when it's facing downhill? Does it happen no matter which direction the car is facing?

When you put your car in park, a pawl engages a gear inside the transmission to prevent the car from moving. If this happens only when the car is facing uphill, or only when it's facing downhill, it's likely that either the pawl or the gear was damaged from being put into park while the car was still moving. If this is the case, the transmission will need to be opened and the damaged parts replaced.

If it happens no matter which direction the car is facing, it means the car is not "fully" going into park, and it probably just needs an adjustment to the shift mechanism.

You can download a copy of the Protege5 workshop manual here:

Instructions for adjusting the shift mechanism can be found here:

Good luck.

Don't want to hijack the guys thread, but just stating my experience. Since I adjusted my ebrake first, then checked the caliper itself and found the issue to be with the caliper itself.

I've had this issue, with a manual, that has had the e-brake adjusted a couple of times. So I just always put it in gear when I shut it off.
