We changed the rear shock absorbers on our 2009 mazda3 a couple months ago-
-we put some ebay sensens or something on there, and we've just recently disposed of the old blown ones. Before disposing of the old ones, i thought it would be a good idea to drain the oil out because maybe we can dispose of it in a way that's better than sending it to a land fill. Ideally i wouldn't send any of it to the dump but i don't know when i'd ever have use for any shock absorber parts. Scrap metal maybe.
We started by arbitrarily choosing a spot in one of the shocks to drill a hole. No prior research has been done, because whatever. Some gas exploded out but we couldn't get any oil, so we drilled another hole and that allowed us to pump out the oil. Now that we know what side to drill on for the oil, we started drilling on that side on the other shock. This produced a geyser of whatever oil was inside there that lasted for 3-4 seconds, and went all over that side of the garage and everything in it. It was... totally f'in awesome. Holy damn. Oil explosion. Except now there's oil all over my stuff.
I guess you have to let the pressure off the oil by letting the gas out first...
I don't think they responsibly dispose of the drained oil anyways... i think it just goes to a land fill for oils and such. Now it's responsibly sprayed everywhere.
Just a story for future reference... should anyone else decide to drain oil out of their old shock absorbers.
