How many Brits? Fancy a cuppa?

Hi everyone, please could anyone help.... I know this is covered in other parts of the website but I need some Brit suggestions. My daughter lives in London so hasn't got/need a car but she's had a baby and will be visiting us in Northumberland so Grandad(that can't be me!) needs a baby seat. If anyone has any suggestions/ explanations as I'm faced with iso fix? strap fix? and things have changed since I last needed a safe seat 30 years ago. Our granddaughter is 3 months old now and is visiting in April but I need to future proof it.
Thanks for any suggestions.

I use a maxi cosi pebble seat. Went for that one after reading reviews. It is a rear facing seat that can sit on a rear seat and be secured with a seat belt but to make life a lot easier I bought the familyfix ISO fix base. It clicks into the ISO fix metal hooks buried in the seat gap. The base stays in the car and the seat then just clicks on and off. They are 120 from halfords.

If you are not going to use a car seat much, a standard seat with a belt would suffice I'm sure.

You can't future proof it, as I believe you need a seat that will only be of use upto say 3 years old.

We have just bought a seat for 4-12 years from mothercare at 40, but its only the seat belt version, my daughter has the isofix which is a lot dearer.

.

Indeed. Children's car seats I believe come in group 0-3 (web search will confirm) as groups relate to the childs weight, height and age.
I believe there are only a few providers that make a seat covering multiple groups though IMO it's a compromise and better to buy specific seats for each group. We are now on our 3rd seat (for a child of 5yrs) and the seat can be separated leaving just the base to provide a booster seat up until 10 / 12 years or whenever the child is big enough to use regular seat and belt without a booster. I think the 3rd seat we have is group 2/3?

Thanks for all the help and suggestions, I think I'll go and try Maxi Cosi Pebble.... Are ISo fix bases all the same or are they vehicle/seat specific?

Thanks Chris,
This Grandad role gets more confusing, I'm also faced with the possibility of putting the seat in Grandma's VW Up so the iso fix should do that.
Whilst searching for information I came across a decent review page of a long term CX5 test (also shows a car seat in use in a Mazda)... the review mirrors what we have found about the car in the last year including the dearth of replacement windscreens!

Thanks again for all the help and advice.

Meanwhile, back to the rattling dash problem. It seems that the work they did before Xmas has actually made things worse in terms of rattles so it goes in tomorrow for 3 days.

Got the car back in 2 days rather than the expected 3 - well done Oakmere. They said they found some bolts which required tightening (glad I didn't have a problem with the wheels!). The result? still rattles! I must say that it is better than it was, almost back to when I first took it in and made it worse, but it still has a problem. Back we go to Mazda I guess.

How old is it? Mine is in for the water ingress as we speak. Gives a whole new meaning to the term "Pool car"!

I don't use the stop start, since the cars failed to start twice in six months due to the smart charging system allowing the battery to drop low.
For my driving its more or less not required, and I don't see any advantage for me.

An example I do a 15 mile run to my fishing lake, on arrival I have a locked gate to go through, if I allow it the car will auto stop while I get out and unlock, then 200 yards further on I park the car, what's the point?

Not that great these Mazdas are they.

My first one, and the first car to fail to start since a Mini Metro.

Others have oil rise problems still, although rare now.
Vibrating mirrors and bonnets.
built in swimming pools.
Built in rattles.
Crap satnavs.

Compared to my last Xtrail which never missed a beat, two recalls, one seat swab changed, that I could have lived with, and a vibrating interior mirror that I did live with, over nearly 5 years of ownership with a Renault engine.
The engine while reliable never gave the 266 pound feet of torque for me especially low down.

Which is the area the Mazda blows the Xtrail away, the engine is the best 4 pot I have ever owned, and the car handles really well for a SUV.

I Love the CX 5 as a car. It looks great and performs great. BUT because of the problems I wouldn't buy Mazda again.

Sad to hear these comments really.

I've had the oil rise issue, seems to be sorted and not unheard of in a new to market product. I thought that despite new in the UK there has been 12 months history across the Atlantic; but what I didn't consider, no diesel over there.

Noisy rattling dash. Doesn't really bother me I've had VWs with worse including creaking on a Passat from day one. I'll wait until there is a real fix before I get it looked into.

No water inside, no vibrating mirrors or bonnet (hood) no starting issues.

Carpets are very thin and poor quality though, and the plastics are a tad flimsy. Poor heating/ventilation for rear passengers (so they tell me, mine's OK though) Daft place for the clock, and red display colours around the heating controls that fail to match the dash, but hey ho.

TomTom, well that is a story on its own, I presume the new Mazda 3 uses a different make? Live traffic works etc. To be fair not bad now but the experience and the poor way I was handled by TomTom customer care is lamentable.

One thing I still like is being one of an exclusive club. If I happen to see another on the road I always wave, and nearly always get a response.

The point is, I may well buy another one in a couple of years as I cannot think of anything else that will suit.

I love the drive experience, the way the rear cover lifts with the tailgate, the handling for a high-up car.

Yes, I'm in the "happy with mine" club too. I'm on my 3rd MX5, the oldest of which suffered an AC failure at 6 years old, but have found them to be pretty reliable. The CX5 does everything I want it too, is as good to drive as any SUV I have driven and provides for comparatively low running costs though servicing seems pricey compared to Korean equivalents. It's hugely practical, a bit dull inside perhaps but perfectly functional.

I've had no real problems, a little bit of bonnet shake early on but that seems to have disappeared on its own. No rattles, no leaks (that I am aware of) and I really like the SatNav particularly the Live Traffic which didn't seem to give me as much trouble as others have experienced. OK, the graphics aren't as modern as on some other cars but it generally plots decent routes though it does have a tendency to bring me back from B to A via a different route from A to B when there is not a lot of difference in the mileages, if you know what I mean.

My I-stop works fine most of the time but occasionally seems to stop working so I just switch it on and off again quickly and it works fine again, just a reboot so to speak. I find it quite useful. Current mpg on the latest tank of fuel was showing 51 last night (though I haven't been anywhere near a motorway on this tank....)

All cars can have problems, for sure my XF had more niggles than my CX and a prior Volvo XC90 wasn't anything to shout about either.

The one aspect on Mazda ownership that grates however is the dealers.....I'm sure there are some good ones out there but they seem to be far and few between.

OK Iv'e just got back from viewing the new Nissan Qashqai. It's a beautiful car and a big improvement on the old model (which I traded in for my CX 5) The quality of the new Qashqai is amazing. I'm very tempted to return to Nissan.
