The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

My old 94M Miata, which coincidentally was also turbo. Wow that picture was taken 6 years ago now...

I took the MS3 out for a drive yesterday, the 3rd time I've driven it. It was sitting for a while in the garage. When I first started it, a few seconds later I heard a ping - like pre detonation. That was a little concerning. Then after taking it on about a 6 mile drive and being a little hard on it (probably shouldn't have been considering it only had like 60 miles on it) I noticed a burning oil smell coming from the turbo area of the engine bay. Wondering if I have a lemon turbo or if its just a normal thing. I'm going to have to check back there to see if there are any leaks from it. Perhaps I have the curse of the smoking turbo on a new and stock MS3? Argh... The smell is coming from the engine bay though, not the exhaust.

New turbo'd cars will smell. My mom test drove a cx7 and got on it a bit & it had a smoke/burning smell. I think it'll all in the break in period. It varies, but if you say it's new & has less than 60 miles on it & it sits and it hasn't started in awhile, could just be the seals 'settling' in.

Yea, I'm hoping its a normal thing and after some more driving it goes away. Only time will tell.

ours smelled when I came back from the test drive ... but all's been well with it since we've had it. almost up to 1k already! : ) or maybe we rolled over last night already ...

Could also be a bad tire (broken belt), I've had a few that I could feel at low speeds and then feel again briefly at higher speeds.

I havent seen any gen pu's with smoking turbos, i doubt its that. As far as the smells, youre still well within the break-in period. My car got driven less than 5k miles a year for 5.5 years by the previous owner, and UOA showed that i was still breaking in the motor at 30k miles. I would frequently smell weird things after hard driving and going up the hill on portage trail. Everything is good now after another 20k miles of hard driving.

Yeah. Obviously the first 1,000 is considered break-in period. But UOA detected high metal content after my first oil change after picking up the car. 2Nd one, the lab said i was good to go and that it was better late than never and that was just past 31k miles.

Edit: blackstone labs is the s*** if youre looking into any issues with your car or just looking to see how oil is holding up between changes. They accurately notified me of a cracked head on my old saturn from the amount of coolant they found. I couldnt see any in the oil when i drained it, but it was bad enough that they were able to give me the heads up.

^I used them once on my 01 Neon, they said excess sodium content. I took the oil in the winter months while running a K&N, lol.

Both of those would be intolerable at high speeds if they were noticeable at low speeds.

Phen and Kevin had bent OEM wheels on their MSM's (maybe Peaches too?) and you couldn't really feel it other than around 35mph.

The tires on my car need to be balanced but are fine around 70 then get wobbly at 75. (they're getting replaced anyway.)

But hey, what do I know.

three of the four winter wheels on the smart are bent. But they are balanced pretty good and it's not noticeable 1-90mph :) (one is bent enough that it has a slow leak)

I think that was due to the tires. I didn't feel anything with the Contis. However, with the red wheels I feel a small shake @ 70, but 80 is the sweet spot. Other than that its fine.

I feel it at 35 and between 70 and 80. Only when it's close to the harmonic frequency.
