Tripoint cam gears and JDM cams install

OK everyone after 5 days of trying to get it to run its running now so that is the good news. The bad news is about the cam gears. Well come to find out somehting on the cam gears is interfeering with the cam position sensor. SOOOOO Only the intake has a adjustable gear on it good in the fact that i can still adjust one but bad that i can't adjust them both. But its runnign now and very well i might add pulls better up top and is smoother to me with better throttle responce at least on teh 1.8L I haven't driven a 2.0 with them yet. Another result of this is that I'm goign to sell teh other cam gear. SO any of you who want to adjust your timing on teh intake and pull 4-5 more hp out of your motor its going to be 150 shipped to you. The set was 300 and 314 shipped to me. All I did was bolt the gear on and then take it off when I found out it was the problem. Absolutly nothing wrong with it. Let me know if one of you are interested.

here is y I think it didn't work on teh exhaust side. As you all know we have a cam position sensor. Well I know this sensor has varying resistance so that tells me it reads the high and low spots on the cam gear. The tripoint cam gear has the slots for the bolts to the adjustable portion in this area also. So what I think was happening is that it was reading high spots low spots and no spots which is what was messing it up. I'm jsut goign to use the intake side though and be happy with it. I have played around with it some and you can tell a very noticeable difference. Would be a great upgrade for those of you with the 2.0 i've got the other one for sale as stated above for 150 shipped PM me!!!

OIC, what you are saying...So, the cam postion sensor is only on the exhaust side, or both cams?

The Cam angle sensor is sticking out of the bottom-right of the valve cover. That little damn part is expensive. It will cost you about $112 from the dealer if you ever need it replaced like I did. I will try to find a picture.

I'm confused... Tri-Point's product is not working for you as advertised. So you're just going to say "oh well" and sell it. Why not work with them and get it resolved for free? Have you talked to them at all? Good luck...

Chris

Yeah man, you need to get the problem worked out. Are you sure both units are exactly the same? I know I'm aways taking s*** back apart because I put the right hand piece on the left side or some crap like that. Tripoint advertised these things as taking that hall effect sensor into account didn't they Give them a call. Adjusting only one cam is like changing only one spark lug. Good luck.

it looks like the cam gear nodes are on the same circle as the screws that are used to adjust the gear. could those screws be causeing the sensor to read wrong? i would defnitely call tri-point to find out what is going on.

I thought of that and the cam sensor is a ferrous metal detector so all it does is sence magnetic fields. The bolts are made of a non-ferrous metal but the slots in teh adjustment track are what may be screwing it up. and the reason why i'm giving up is I'm probably just going to make my own gear from an extra I have sitting around. SO thats one less gear I have to make so I'm just going to sell the other one.

Ahh ok. I was just making sure... You seem to be putting a lot of effort and patience into this NA car, and I didn't want to see you say "well that doesnt work, oh well", and in a way, give up on it :). Have you talked to TriPoint at all. Yes, you will be making your own, but no, most of us cannot figure that out for ourselves, and will rely on you explaining what you think is wrong to TriPoint! :D

Chris

I've called up Tripoint as well on this issue and haven't resceived an answer and this has been 2 weeks ago just about. I have a feeling they used them on their cma position sensor that is made for the MoTec ECU and it will read the knodes but the stocker won't so they don't want to mess with it.

chdesign's cam gear is on my car now :D
I putted it on intake cam but i think i turned on tooooo many degrees .... it dies at idle , but stil running fine at higher rpm-s.
I mixed up that on line on cam gear is 2 degrees .... i thought it was one ... so my intake cam is advanced 7 degrees

Tonight i turn it to 3.5 degrees and maeby try it on exhaust cam ... will see how much time i have :)

Yeah 7 degrees is a bit much but glad to hear that it got on your car ok, Your header is coated now and about to go on my car :D Hope you enjoy man I will let you know if I decide to make a exhaust cam gear.

chdesign,
I look forward to your findings after you get your tuning done etc. I'm still trying to find out which way to go (turbo or NA, with a leaning towards turbo), but if you can get decent enough gains out of your setup, such as 180HP+, I like the idea better. Right now the turbo scene has me a bit afraid. It seems like people are having all types of problems with the BEGI kit which is supposedly engineered by God himself ;). The only people who seem to have a trouble free setup are spoolinmp3 and Stou, and who knows how often they have to adjust things that I have no idea how to do. We shall see.

How much longer til your break-in is done and you can tune this NA beast?

Chris

Its probably going to be a couple months before i get it totally done. Turbo is fun but I do know that Terry aka Spoolin is constantly tuning his setup and I don't know about stou but i'm sure he has to do some tinkering. Turbo is high maitnence and requires alot of monitoring and tuning. NA does require tuning but is not nearly as much high maitnence. 180 hp may be atainable once i get an E-Manage not sure though even if i can get 160 hp out of it I will be much happier than what i had with the turbo with the 170+ HP. Remember its fun to drive a ample car fast than it is to drive a fast car mediocre. Make the car what it will be for you to have fun with it. I loved the power of turbo but didn't have any fun with it due to all the tinkering. With teh NA i bolt it on do a couple adjustments and i'm good to go no more tinkering and no more worrying if my wastegate isn't going to stick and let my turbo overboost and BOOM no more worrying if my engine will hold the boost as long as i own teh car, no more thinking about what if this what if that. Turbo creates a worry situation that makes you car more of a burden than it is a joy ride. So far Big_Big, me, Mikesmazda, Incimal, and ambient have all had terminal problems with the turbo thing. Incimal blew his motor, mike can't get his turbo to spool, ambient has a cracked downpipe and a warped flywheel, Big_big fried his rings. So askyourself do you want to take the chance.......so far there are 4 turbo proteges besides the HKS protege that are running well. But again all of them tinker all the time. And the guy with the MP3 up north is having problems with his BEGI kit not spooling correctly and the FPR not functioning well. If you do decide to go turbo i would suggest buying a Eclipse or RX-7

There is nothing wrong with your sensor. Just install a washer between sensor and housing. This will pull the sensor out and not hit the the cam gear. I have mine installed for over 2 years with no problem. Both gears are set at -3 and the car pulls great at around 5k. You can also check with our Aussie Mod. He had the same problem till we had a little chat on this same problem.
