whining in and out of gear

Noticed the noise the other night. Any gear around 2k-3k rpm or in neutral coasting down a hill and occasionally if I rev in neutral I hear a lovely whine. Sounds kind of like faint straight cut gear noise but not as loud. I'm kind of ruling out transmission issues because it will do it while in neutral when stopped or coasting just not as pronounced.
Did a search and didn't find anything substantial. Any suggestions of what to check? I'm due for a timing belt replacement I believe...

Probably just the trans synchros making noise. Could be your LSD if it starts to become more of a knock, i'm about to replace mine.

Is that a bad thing? It's rather annoying. I wouldn't think it would be the mfactory diff in my tranny.

Pilot and throw out bearing might need to be replaced.

Leave the car in neutral with the engine running and push the clutch to the floor, the noise might go away. If it does, time for some clutch maintenance.

The noise really only happens when the car is moving. Something between 2k-3k in any gear. I know my 3rd and 5th whine because they are straight cut. It sounds like a muffled version. It will happen in neutral if im coasting down a hill just not as loud. Possibility of a wheel bearing? I've checked for play with my car off the ground and little to none. It sounds like it's coming from my drivers side wheel area the more I pay attention to the noise

All gears in the transmission are constantly meshing even if they are not engaged (except reverse)

you will still hear the gears

I was beginning to figure this my clutch is beginning to slip every once in a while. Looks like I'll be replacing it.
