The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Sooo, not to change the subject entirely but all my nerd Meeps with glasses, can anyone recommend a eye doctor to get my prescription? I need new glasses and instead of spending $500 at a store I'm going to order them online. Has anyone else tried an online store for their glasses? My GF and friend at work both have and said it's inexpensive and worked out well.

I used to go to Walmart actually. The last pair of glasses and a vision test cost me a total of maybe $120.
There's one in Canton that a buddy of mine works at that I was going to start going to but I can't remember which store it is. Will look into it.

I am sure that my prescription is far worse than yours. Try lenscrafters locally or sears optical.

I go to lens crafters. My last trip I got regular and sunglasses. They did 12 months same as cash. That made it soooo much easier to pay.

How much did you pay at Lens Crafters, Larry and Marlon? I want to stay away from a store like that. While the customer service is great, the price is a lot more than ordering them online. Last time I got new glasses/prescription checked was 7 years ago and it was about $500.

That's not all that bad. My eyes change so much that I usually have to get new ones every other year at $2-300 a pop. I can tell they've changed again because I'm having a hard time seeing with my current ones. Of course, I got them in China for all of $25, but yeah.

I believe it was ~650. Mind you my perscription is jacked up. My Ray-ban shades have a wrap style so the lenses had to be made off site with anti-glare and polarized. My regular glasses were done off site as well with progressive bi-focal. I know, I know, no need to remind me that I am old. Here is my issue with on-line glasses. How can you tell how they will look on your face? It would suck getting your new glasses and they make you look even nerdier than normal because the frame is too big/small. Know what I'm sayin?

I know what you are saying. -Butters

But they have a thing where you can upload a pic of your face and just move the frames onto my ugly mug. Kinda like TireRack with the wheels. :)

My buddy at work got a pair online for $48 shipped, with lenses and and frames. You just send in your prescription and they make the lenses and put them in the frames you pick out. Tessa's were about $140 for the same deal. My prescription hasn't changed much, if at all, in the last 7 years and I don't need anything fancy so I thought the online route would be a good idea.

In that case Lens crafters, walmart, sears, or whoever always have in store eye exams. I would say just set an appointment with one of them. The Doc at my area Lens crafters is a private contractor of sorts so he would do an exam for the regular price no questions. Here is another question. Doesn't the lens/perscription have to be centered to your eyes in order for them to work right?

i think what Larry is saying (from my observation of going with Marlon) is that when you pick out the frames you want, they mark the glass while you have them on and take measurements on the lenses ... like if you have bifocals, or whatnot, where the glass has to change due to where they sit on your nose ... am i making any sense?

Lenses are the most expensive part, my total bill was $275

after your insurance, i'm thinking Evan doesn't have insurance, hence his trying to save some money ... but i could be wrong ...

I was under the assumption that was part of the prescription/eye exam...?

see above ...

ON ANOTHER RANDOM NOTE: does anyone on here/near me have the skills and tools to help me make a shelf like this? i found this one on Overstock.com for $189 but I'm thinking I could make it for cheaper ...

That makes sense, Lauri, but I don't have bi-focals or insurance. I don't remember them measuring anything other than fitment when they were all done. But that was so long ago and my memory is so terrible...
