I need Help with this MSP headlight conversion on a P5!

Actually i kind of like the MSP lights better because they have more lighting in a way then the P5 but that's kind of a funny sign lol!

Remember that not every member is on here 24/7 and can respond to everyones needs as quickly. Anyways......

No and the diagrams tells you exactly where the power is coming from, self explanatory just look right above and below the diagram. It states " Connection On Car " right above the diagram meaning both the stock wire plugs ( H4 female plug and 9005 female plug ) and " New Headlight (H4) Connector ( looking at it from the rear of connector ) " right below the diagram ( which is an aftermarket H4 male plug ). You are using the same stock wires/plugs to power the relays. Like I suggested, buy both female and male H4 plugs and also a female 9005 plug for each side so you don't cut any stock wires. Ebay has them available for cheap.

If you remember that the P5 keeps the low beam on when the high beam turns on...... well that wire always stays on when you switch it on as you can see in the diagram. What you are essentially doing is when you power on or switch to the high beam, that positive power from the high beam powers the coil in the relay to switch the negative side from the low beam to the high beam negative so they alternate and not keep both on at the same time. If you failed to do this you would have both high and low beam filaments inside the bulb come on at the same time which will cause the bulb to heat up greater than it is expected to causing it to fail. Too much heat kills the bulb or reduces it's life span.

That is the reason an H4 bulb will alternate from high to low in a sedan as to why the headlamp is one reflector in an MSP/MP3/LX/DX/ES instead of the two reflectors in a P5. Since the bulb does not require a specific polarity meaning the flow of energy to be side specific as in negative and positive you can literally power it reverse polarity and you will still get a current to go through it to light the bulb. An LED is a different story and requires a specific polarity flow.

Remember the relay is basically a switch inside letting you choose two different paths when you energize the coil. When you add power to the coil inside it acts as a magnet pulling the lever towards it. When you cut the power you are demagnetizing the coil letting the lever go back to the other connection. There is a spring inside that keeps the lever away from the other contact. 87 and 87a is where you want the negative or even positive flow to go through. You can even use it as a switch to turn something off when you add power to the coil. The possibilities are endless with the relay. Just remember it is a powered switch. The Amps are what the Relay can handle.

I will try making a how to on this as soon as I have a chance. I took pictures of my stock P5 wiring and my brothers now MSP that are in my garage to show what the differences are. Again as stated both Sedan and Hatch are wired differently in its headlamp wiring as to why one needs a relay when going to MSP Headlights in a P5.
Thanks for looking out sport and explaining how the relay switch works but the good news is i Got my High beams working =-) but the only down fall is after i turn my brights on they stay on butwhen i pull back the headlight switch to turn them off they still stay on they only turn off if i turn off the whole entire headlight switch but then they turn back on again when i push the switch foward. Well im glad my brights work and yes im so glad that Job is done because it is not an Easy Job i don't care what any one says that job is a pain in the Neck with or with out instructions.

So the MSP has two filament in one bulb. When you go to high beam, one turns off and the other turns on..

In the P5 all that happens is the second bulb turns on, the other stays on..

4 > 2

True... but I would take a better low beam than all 4 bulbs on. So you plan on driving with all 4 on all the time?

I plan to solve my dilema by doing a retrofit using a pair of Lexus ES350's for my low beams. Still debating whether to use my Touareg Highbeam projectors for my highs as they use the same bulb as the P5.

That makes sense, but then I can return by saying, Why Not Retro the ES Projectors into a 4 Beam P5 housing and then you get the seperate High Beam Bulb as well.

This has gotten off topic and for that I am sorry to the OP.

The answer to his question has been solved but to answer your question, that's what I plan on doing, retroing my P5 headlights as I don't like the side markers on the sedan headlights. Just debating whether to use halogen high beam projectors or the stock reflectors. I don't use my high beams as much as I like to.

Pesonally...

Solution is.

High Low Projector PLUS High Projector.

4 Projectors with HID

So in a way the P5 has the filament in 2 separate bulbs working independently as apposed to the Msp having 2 filaments in the same bulb working a more brighter glow. I still think the Msp headlights look nicer but some Like the P5 better

Or you could do what I did, dual bixenon housings (high and low beam) in each light. 4 high and low hids ftw. Also did bexenon's for fog lights too, just because.

Jesus, that thing must look like a runway beacon at night.

If you live near an airport make sure to let them know you are driving around or planes might try to land on your car.

Not in a way, it does. The difference in the H4 is that only one turns on at a time. If both lit up it would heat up the bulb more than it should and cause the filament/s to break/melt.

Almost done on the "how-too". Just need to write it up.

Yes that's what I had originally planned but I have single Xenon HID Projectors at the moment from an ES350 ( RX330 look-a-likes ) for my P5. The retro I plan on my brothers P5 is how you almost described it, Bi-Xenon Projectors with the High Beam Reflector coming on as well when the High Beams are turned on.

Hey Guys ok it's 9 months later since ive done this MSP Headlight conversion and wiring on my P5 . Ok so the problem is My lights are really Dim and when my headlights are on the brights just automatically turn on when im driving and its really annoying also the only way to turn the brights off is if i turn the headlights on and off again i cant turn my brights off with just pushing and pulling the Bright switch forward and backwards it just doesn't work that way. How do i fix this? (zombies)

It's not that they're dim, the sedan lights suck especially the low beams. Sounds like you screwed up the wiring somewhere

Yeah no kidding the Wiring is Screwed up somewhere but my Step father helped me out on this one almost a year ago maybe ill get a new Relay or something

I'm saying check all the places you tied wiring together sounds like it probly came apart and is getting a bad connection or grounding out. Make sure you solder and heat shrink it this time, or do it right and get the harness for the headlights from a sedan. Or go back to the nice p5 lights that I would love to have
