Teeson's Probege Build Thread

Nah, I have/had a KLDE mani. The G4's are different than the ZE and DE mani's. And mine is in my garage waiting to be gutted for when I get another motor for boost. Sorry, man. But you can find curve necks all the time on Millenia's and on PT.com
bay-2.jpg

oh maybe yours looks different because its from a milly.. hows your clearance with the brake booster?

mine is a curve neck KL01, justin's for example is a true straight neck. the difference is very minor, but his neck past the runners is straight and longer.
arrg! why did they make so many with little changes lol

Here's a better pic. I didn't have any clearance issues with my intake mani and as you can see, the battery and brake booster are still there.

thats goo to know thanks. It was worth a shot for the manifold lol :D.

will be looking forward to your boost build...

on a side note:
got a bit done today, manifold mounted, vacuum mess started. I have the lines in the generic diagram sorted.. but theres a couple extras on the throttle body. one I know is from cruise control, brake booster and the PCV valve. I'll have to make a parts run tomorrow to get some bigger vac lines. Then I'll start running wires and fighting the exhaust (ebay ftl. whee), then rust proof what I can reach of the engine bay..
will post pics tomorrow.

As for things on the TB there should only be the IAC, everything else should be on the manifold
This is for obd2

If you not a member I probe talk, I would join. You can find anything you need to know about your engine on there

thanx for the link, that answers most of my questions. That diagram has a bit more info than the one I was using, which was probably for OBD1..

I'm not a member on probetalk, but I frequently use it. There's a lot of good info on it.

bit off topic but where exactly are you from? I am out in Surrey and i never really see and modded up P5's... just old grandma's "zooming" around hehe :P always try to wave to someone who has some modded p5's in hopes they are a member!

I do the same thing! I only know of one other modded pro5 in mission, never really met the guy. I've seen a few others but they're frankly riced out...
I'm out in Maple Ridge, i'm always around abby and mission though.
Do you have pics of yours anywhere? I'll look out for it

today's update:
Vacuum mostly finished (hat tip to Jedidiah) got the spark plug wires all pretty and run (correctly), laid out the wiring and started making sure it all plugs together. I have a few unknowns but I think I know where they came from. Then tucked it all a bit, need zap straps.
lol I went on a parts run to get the power steering figured out, thankfully I brought the return neck with me. I was trying to avoid explaining exactly what I was doing, as to not boggle his mind (I got the least imaginative guy there, normally I avoid him). He pulled a part number and grabbed the line, which was 3/8. Yaa no.. so a test fit later and I left with 3/4 line. Still need a coupler and I assume the protege's return is 5/8, but since I spent 45 min just getting like 4 things I decided to do it another day...

IMG_3699.jpg

also cleaned up my workspace. again. threw out a bunch of little stuff I don't need

Mocked up the exhaust, wow. I wasn't expecting much from eBay, but the pipes were a good 2 inches off from lining up. I expected to have to fight with it a little... but that was pretty bad. Then came the EGR pipe..

not pretty but fits..
Need to get around to start rust coating the engine bay... not gonna be my favourite thing. Other than that, connect a ground or two and its ready for swap time!
That thing I found in my transmission is indeed the reverse switch, so I will be swapping the gate, oil baffle and 5th gear set from my FS trans on the day of. I also noticed today that the fans on the probe rad (which look beastly) don't have a place in my current wiring harness.. I'll have to make a custom setup that retains the protege's relay setup. Another con into using a probe rad, maybe while I wait for my pics to upload I'll make a list:

Probe rad: Pro's
massive fans, plenty of cooling
2 stage operation (high/low)
ECU already knows how to use them
Con's
Custom mounts
custom wiring
2 stage may not work with protege setup

Protege rad: Pro's
already fits
enough cooling potential

Con's
1 fan, other is just for A/C, though could be wired for high setting (con for custom wiring then)
custom hoses
ECU will have to be tricked into using it's fan

I'm going with the probe rad, mounts are easy, wiring is my thing and the amount of cooling that it can provide it plenty for anything I do with it.

So these are the two vacuum nipples I can't get a definite answer on, I'll assume the smaller one is for the HVAC, and the bigger is for the brake booster. Please correct if I'm wrong. You can just see the bigger one poking from below the throttle cable bracket; which as was stated (jedidiah again) has a waaaay larger gap than the protege.. will have to find a longer/custom cable.

And are these two taped up coolant nipples for the heater core? once again can't find a pic anywhere to save my life. If so which is send and which is return?

not too pretty but it works

if you ever want or need to rebuild your dist tell me

and as for rad, i would go with p5 rad if you dont mind the lines, for the fan wiring you just cut the p5 wire from the ecu and wire it to the kl coolant fan relay no 1 and coolant relay no 2 and no 3
with 1 fan on 110 degree heat i never made it past 1/2 on my temp gauge
2011-10-31145659.jpg

that hose is off a ford taurus i trimmed one end by about 1/4 or 1/4 an inch, i have the part number if you want to stay with the p5 rad to make things easier
and the other hose isn't that you just need a 30 inches 1" to 1 1/4" flexi hose

and our IM is the short neck the ZE is the long neck to make things easier
most mazda parts will interchange with probe parts however wiring is completely different

just a thought but i think the obd2 probe has the oil pressure gauge and sender, since the p5 doesnt have an oil pressure gauge you might want to scrap the oil pressure sender, i haven't looked at it yet but i think you can screw in an aftermarket one in its place and hook it up to a gauge

forcedpgt i think thats how you spell his name on here is a god when it comes to kl related info
his name on PT is WhiteDart
you might think about doing this

and i would do an hei mod, im in the middle of doing mine, got all the parts just working on modding the dist cap
http:// clubprotege . com/wil/howto/hei/index.htm

since your engine is still out of your car, can you get a 626 or mx6 kl high pressure power steering line that runs to the steering rack and see if it bolts up to the p5 steering rack?

Ya I drive between Surrey and Abby (I go to University of the Fraser Valley) 3x a week. Yellow with Yakima roof rack. All badges are blacked out with black stock wheels! hoping to start modding once the $$ starts to pile up :P

thats more or less what I plan to do, still like the probe rad more :D

that makes sense

will that not cause a CEL?

looking at both, unsure about doing it with the OBD2 system, need this be smog legal.

engines still in the car, I'll have 4 days in a row next week to do everything. I think the P5 (with slight modification) high pressure line will bolt up to the probe's

thanx again for your help, this is clearing up a lot of grey area. I'll have to figure something out for the throttle cable..

The P5's high pressure power steering line does indeed bolt up to the Probe's pump. You might have to unbolt a bracing bracket but it's a piece of cake. :)

The low pressure line on the other hand was a total b**** for me. Haha.

It PS high side bolts straight up but its a lot longer

Ill check for cel on the pressure sender, I thought it went straight to the gauge

If you get a different throttle cable, run it from a different hole in the firewall do its doesn't have to make a U bend

Sorry thought I read that your engine was out, but when you pull it if you could see if the probe PS high side I would really appreciate it
And for the low side you can use your p5 tank but you well need to adapt the probe line smaller or the p5 bigger

Also do you have the intermediate shaft bracket? It bolt on the lower backside of your engine

The low pressure line on the other hand was a total b**** for me. Haha.

Ya I knew better at the parts store after reading about your adventure lol.

And I'm only kinda following you, I don't have a probe high pressure line to test fit, sorry :(

I'm going to bolt the trans up tonight, just to be sure

I'll do an AFPR later, and probably the HEI, just running out of time at the moment..
And good tip on the cable, that could be a fun one to figure out. If I do the bracket like you did does it still have a tight bend in it?
lol one more thing, I can get a better pic without that bracket in the way, what is it your looking for? the coolant neck?
those two taped up lines are fuel lines, the EGR vacuum is run already.

Thanx again guys, this is a HUUUGE help

@booboo809 I'll keep an eye out for ya!

Good start on this swap! I'm pumped to see this progress...

I'm also glad to see you and Boo Boo are right across the boarder from me. I live in Bellingham right now and head up north from time to time. I would LOVE to see your P5 when the swap is done and it's fully functional.

Northwest meet and greet sometime in the Spring? I think so.

MAF will was cause CEL but there is a workaround thats kinda long so i wouldn't recomend it unless you want to

my bend is terrible on my cable, im trying to figure out how to fix that
they sell universal kits and ive seen some for carbs that have a U bend mount that ive considered but im really looking for a costless fix like shorten the cable and trim the sleeve over the cable if i can find an easy way to trim the sleeve ill tell you

i was just trying to figure out what was taped off, i figured it was fuel lines

HEI will be smog legal, and i dont like it trips the CEL unless something misfires

Heck. Yes. Great White North meetup.

Ya I taped them off just to keep them clean, green is also easy to spot when the engine's in the car.
hmmm.. I'll have to spend some time on the throttle cable then, its hard without the thing being in there.. I asked my welder buddy about welding the bracket like you did, he asked me "why not just use a probe GT throttle cable?"
anyone know why that may not work?

Ya i'll probs do the HEI and external coil after the things up and running. I'm trying to change as little as possible as far as wiring goes, it gets complicated real fast when nothings stock.

todays update:
was in the garage till 12:30, got a heck of a lot done. Literally have 3 minor things left that I can do before the engines in.
trans is apart

IMG_3714.jpg

went fluid shopping, still have to get trans fluid. They didn't have a listing for it, I went home did some research and am going to go with 75W-90 GL4 Royal Purple.

IMG_3713.jpg

have all plugs accounted for on the engine, I know where the others are going except these two. They come off the back of the harness, just past the rear 02 sensors. ABS maybe?

IMG_3709.jpg

I have my home made tranny saver bracket, I might have made it too beefy though.

photo-2.jpg

One more interesting photo, found the other part of the mystery piece right where Brian_MP5T said.. however it is the part that prevents you from shifting into reverse when in 5th. not the reverse sensor, thats done on the top case.

i think it would be easier to mod the p5 throttle cable or cut and weld a 1 inch plate in the middle
if you can take a pic of the wire colors or list them i can tell you where they go

oil pressure gauge--->oil pressure sender--->engine ground so you should be able to just throw in an aftermarket one with no problems

thats probably what I'll do then.
and thats cool with the oil pressure guage, I'm unsure if I want gauges yet.. the probe ECU has a low pressure cut off yes?
