is our key coded like the new cars? if so is it handled by said immobilizer? do you know how to get rid of it? I might just install another push start, depending on your answers I might be able to finally get rid of they key

Don't you still have to turn on the key to get power? I never got the point of push start, it just seems like an extra step..

Then anyone that slashed the top and hopped in has a free car.. I thought about this at some length when coming up with Miata ideas.

We have wild animals loose east of Columbus near Zainesville! Lions, tigers, grizzlies, wolves, giraffes, etc! Almost 50 animals! The cages were left open and they think the owner committed suicide.

Key, ignition, ECU, and immobilizer are one big "harmonious" package. You need the key, you need the ECU, and you need the immobilizer. I'm trying to rack my brain right now on if there is a potential work-around for it. Nothing is coming to mind. Here's a document about the system. There may be something in there that could give an idea. I haven't read it yet. It will have to wait till later as I'm swamped at work right now.

After a quick search on mazda-speed.com, I found that Flyin Miata has re-wired cars to account for the immobilizer system. Find a wiring diagram for a 2002+ car, and we may be able to figure something out.
ECU is connected to the Immobilizer via one wire. Problem is that the Immobilizer acts as an interrupt to the coils. Cut the wire from ECU to Immobilizer, and car doesn't work. Like I said, find a wiring diagram for a car that has the immobilizer, and I'm sure we can find something.

I'm running a push button start on my Miata. Flip a toggle to power, wait for the fuel pump to finish priming, then push the big button. No key. But then again, it is 100% an autocross car (and usually doesn't have a steering wheel in it lol)

there are 2 reasons why I still had the key:
1. to unlock the steering, I would have to remove the ignition cylinder assembly to 'fix' this. I would have to wire a switch like before to turn the car 'ON', valets broke this one time since they couldn't figure it out and i forgot to tell them
2. on the speed3 and 3 the immobilizer is tied to the ECU so it wasn't easy to bypass it.
for what Phen says, it might be easier on this car, I'll take a look at it later.

I like the first one that is really cool. The only buttons that I've seen on a Miata are the S2000 start buttons that people put in the place of the cigarette lighter. Check out the M.net garage for some really good write ups on how that's done.
Edit: Spec Miatas are required to have the steering lock defeated:
From everything I've read it doesn't sound that difficult. I've been considering doing it for some time as my car gets more and more "trackified".

that's what i saw first, then what appears to be alot of duct tape
I followed the same progression then though there was a large amount of body roll lol.
My thought after seeing the duct tape was "Man... they do make white duct tape, and it's not much more expensive..."
Then saw my favorite played out phrase.
Then thought to myself... Ya know, I have an EK Civic laying around with an engine swap in it not doing much...
because daily driver.
