In the Market for a Mazdaspeed3 - Seeking advice

Hi all,

I just registered as I'm hoping to buy a Mazdaspeed3 in the near future. I'm looking at getting a used 2009 model and could really use some advice on what to look for when checking out the car. Are there problem areas or signs of abuse that I should look out for while I'm test driving the car?

Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you,
Ed

Check the tires if you're looking for abuse. If you see any mods left on the car, then you can determine the last ownner didn't just drive it for business only

Other than that its a matter of test driving it. When you're checking them out, let it idle for a while after its nice and warmed up. After about 5-10 minutes, if there is no smoke coming from the exhaust, your turbo is still good

Its really just like looking at any other used car

^ What he said, plus get a CarFax or similar report on your potential purchases. Also,a magnet is a helpful tool at finding body filler on a vehicle.

Thanks guys. I will do all of the above.

About the mods, one of the cars I'm going to check out has a Cobb CAI. It worries me that they've modded it, but I'm trying not to judge too quickly since this is an enthusiasts car more than anything. I just hope that they're not selling it because they've seen signs of impending doom and want to escape.

BTW, do you know if there are any problems w/ the Mazda factory warranty transferring with the purchase? Since it's a 2009 w/ less than 30k I am assuming the drivetrain and bumper to bumper are still in effect.

Please keep the ideas coming. I appreciate them all.

Thanks,
Ed

Good question. I assume the factory warranty is still good (you have 6k left on b2b), just be carefull of that cobb. Some places will not warrant work with aftermarket stuff. And its a shame if you have to go through a big mess trying to prove to them that your aftermaket part had nothing to do with whatwver part you're trying to get fixed

Unfortunately, the biggest single killer of this car/engine seems to come from improper tunes. And there is virtually no way, as a consumer, that you can find out if your car has been tuned. Not to say its impossible to find out, but in order to you would have to have either a mazda scantool, do some sleuth-work to find out the original owner was and what they did to it, or find a tuning shop and see what they say

As for getting rid of the car because they suspect something would have gone wrong, that's tough to determine. Since an engine failure can be so quickly catostrophic, its almost impossible to tell if its going to happen. Parts can become stressed, but until they actually break you won't know they are bad at all. Kind of like a car battery: you never know when its going to die until it does

I can only speak from personal view and experience, but in my mind I will never purchase a used car again. That is, unless, I have full expectation of fixing that car the way I want to

Like if I were to get a used car now, it would be a miata that I would fully expect to modify into a monster miata with a V8. I would never get rid of my ms3 in order to get a used pontiac sunfire because I want to save money and get good gas mileage. I would expect to pay more in maintenance because its not brand new and I don't trust any previous owner to have upkept it in any way

Sorry to make it sound so bleak

Lol. Definitely bleak, but I don't think that' s a bad way to approach buying a used car. It just means that I should scrutinize every detail when searching. All I can do is be picky and hope that the previous owner stayed away from tuning and was responsible with the rest.

Thanks again for the advice. I wonder how much a Mazda scantool is, lol.

Find a local MS3 owner to go with you to check it out, he/she will know what to look for. May have to offer steak meal in return. :D

I had the dealer put the car up on the lift so I could look under it because I was convinced the exhaust was modified. Clean as a whistle and stock. The only modification was an SRI. It had apx. 20k and the tires where worn as hell. Reading though, that seems fairly common from the stock tires. Look for obvious bolt turning marks, etc.

Lol. The one I'm going to check out this weekend is owned by a college student, I doubt he'll have a lift in his garage. :-p

And I plan on bringing my brother with me, he's not a Mazdaspeed owner, but he's a big SR20 nut and generally knows what to look for.

Oh, one more question, is there a way I could tell he'd be messing with the tuning by markings? I mean the Access Port must plug in somewhere, right? Any ideas on that? My brother is bringing his OBDII scan tool, so we'll look through the logs as well.

A normal scan tool will not find a tune, but a $20,000+ mazda specific scan tool probably would

Reflash tunes just hook into the obdII port once and that's it. A standalone or piggyback would still be with the car, but probably not in your car's case

Lol. I guess that options out; buying a $20K tool to purchase a $20K car doesn't seem fiscally sound. ;-p

Any thoughts on cars that were leased? I checked out the CarFax and saw that it had 15k miles under lease, then sold to the current owner who's had it for 5k miles. I believe that leased cars are required to get serviced at regular intervals, but I wonder if the lessee would care to break it in properly.

Damn, I totally understand wanting the "Peace of Mind" that a new car gives you now.

I too considered a used 09 MS3, but after joining a mazdaspeed forum, I can't ever feel comfortable buying used speed.

A lot of people "stock out" their car to trade it in or sell it, and you'll have no idea what the history of the car is. People recommend a CarFax? That's absolutely useless. A CarFax won't tell you if the previous owner screwed with the ECU and ran a bad tune for thousands of miles just to reflash it and dump it at a dealership.

It's definitely a little scary. I'm just hoping for the best because I'd really like an MS3, but I'm not a fan of the 2nd gen body style; so getting a new one isn't really an option for me.

Same reason why I went 1st gen. CWP ftw! Good luck! I've had mine 08.5 ms3 CWP GT for less than a month already, and I love it!

a CAI and even RMM doesn't really count as a mod, its pretty innocuous, and so many cars have them
