JosueP5's '03 Protege5 Build Thread.

Good news is I just checked on a clockspring, and my cost will be under $100, so that's not too awefull. There's 2 different kinds though, and trying to figure out which one I need without the original will be tricky.

If you call up a Mazda dealer and give them your VIN number they should be able to help you with that.

My guess was an aftermarket wheel was installed and replaced before it was up for sale. Just kinda half assed it when putting it back together.

Isn't buying a pre-modded car fun???? Never a-*******-gain.

Haha. That was my concern when buying this car, but I had hoped it wouldn't be terrible since I was ripping it all out anyway and starting from scratch. It hasn't been that bad yet though, just a few head scratchers that get the wheels turning in your head about what else could be jacked up on this thing.

In my researching for prices, I'm also noticing that a lot of people have the same or similar parts to what I have, and they've been trying to sell them for quite some time. What good is buying a car that you can part out to pay for the things that it needs, if nobody will buy those parts?! lol I'll probably have to price them low just to make the sales.

Josh, I have an airbag light on because I don't have my side airbags anymore so we can swap steering wheels if you like.

edit- about the parts for sale, it's also spring time. People will start buying parts more in the summer. But the Protege is a dying breed. :(

That's alright. For a safety item like that, I'd rather go new just to be sure.

I need to get that for sale thread going. I can speculate all I want, doesn't do any good until the parts are out there! The only other parts I need to price are the pipes, intercooler, and Turbo/manifold/j pipe assembly. I've seen some get between $600-$700 just for that assembly, while others part it out and get a few hundred for the turbo, hundred or so for the manifold, and not sure on the j pipe yet. Oddly enough though, this assembly seems to go fast. You would think the shipping would scare people off...lol

considering they can get it all for about the price of a new turbo, it really is a heck of a deal.

Good news for me then! Haha

It appears as if the manifold and J pipe are just stock MSP as well. I saw someone selling a stock manifold, and it had "callaway" on it. Is this correct?

yeah, the stock mani and s & j pipe were made by callaway. It should say it right on the mani

not that i'm aware of...

there's a mazdaspeed heatsheild that goes over it but alot people just take it off

The Protege is a dying breed when you look at it from a product development standpoint. No one is developing new stuff. But, young kids are getting their hands on them now since the price is low and modifying (re: blowing them up). Thoughts of boost have been running rampant on here.

Were there ever two versions of the MSP exhaust mani?

No. Just the one version. Callaway designed the turbo system for the MSP. None of the MSP prep work was done in Japan at the factory. It was all done in a warehouse in California when they hit the shores.

^^^ And that's a good thing from a sellers standpoint with a turbo kit for sale.

BOOM!!!!!!!!!!

Another thing just hit me as well. I don't know why I tore out the radio already? It's an Alpine flip down with an Ipod hook up. I want/need one with a USB drive on it, and while I was at it, I was going to get one with BT as well. I'm kind of forced to buy the new radio now, no point in throwing the Alpine back in just to pull it back out when it sells. lol Hoping to get the car on the road next week sometime, I'll need some tunes!

Tunes are overrated. None of my 3 driving cars have a working radio right now...

J/k, it blows.

Haha....silence is deafening!! Or road noise in this case.

Sucks though, because only the rear speakers are/were ran off the radio. The fronts are wired back to the amp (that won't be installed until I'm ready for the audio overhaul) Hopefully the stock wires are still behind the dash so I can just hook it up normally and have front and rear on for the time being.

You may want to check into an Alpine Ai-Net KCA-620M USB adapter. Not sure how much they go for, but it adds a USB port... probably a bit cheaper than a new QUALITY deck.

Well, this thought also hit me....

Why go through all that crap trying to sell this unit just so I can use my USB's, when I could easily just buy an IPod and keep this radio? I was gonna ask $150 shipped for it, and who knows if I would've gotten that or how long it would sit around. New BT/USB head units are between $150 and $200, so I'd be out the pocket on a new one by the time this was all said and done.

I was pretty excited about having BT though. I HATE holding the phone up in the car. But then again, what if it was like today, raining cats and dogs and the person can't hear me? Or I don't want other people to hear my conversation? lol

I've got an Alpine CDA-9886 from Crutchfield.com for $200 like 2-3 years ago. It's got USB, iPod integration and BlueTooth. I'm sure you can find one for the cheap. But you can't have mine. heh-heh

ps- who doesn't have an iPod? Jeez, get with the times, fossil.

Tunes are overrated.

Got to agree, can't think of the last time I played music in my car. It took the radio out of my Miata first thing, lol.

Lol listen to this joker.

But about the BT systems, they suck for the people on the other end. I've 'experienced' a few of them, even one from the factory, and it's pretty much worthless imo. I'd just get a bluetooth ear piece if hands free is a huge issue for you.
