KL MSP swap, got a few questions!

I got a msp a few weeks ago not running, Well I have given up on that engine and being unsure whether the trans or turbo is even going to be good once it is running I am just going to kl swap it and make it easy on myself. I have searched very heavily on this subject and I am down to just a few questions. I am going to be using both ecus like one of the other members has, it seems like the easiest solution. I would just do a standalone but I need to be driving this car soon so we can sell my girlfriends explorer. so I'm taking the easiest way out for now. Since I am using both ecu's do I need to run both fuse boxes from the protege and the mx-6? Or will I need just one and which one if so? The junction box by the left kick panel? both or one? I will be using an obd one donor car, I'm not sure on probe or mx-6 yet. I have an engine and trans I just need the wiring harness and radiator and I should be set! also I know that obd1 cars dlc port is allbut useless but it would be nice to be able to wire it up so when something isnt working the way it should I can have cel to notify me and I'll be able to scan it to tell exactly what it is. How has anyone gone about this? Links to swaps on other forums or sites would be great if any one knows of any that would be usefull, I found a few but I'm sure I missed some. Thanks for any help! If there is anybody who has a diagram or could explain exactly how they wired this up I would greatly apprieciative.

Anyone??? I started on it tonight, and by the end of the week I should have the kl together with a nice set of kl31 cams and a mx3 flywheel. Because of the tight budget that'll probly be the most of performance upgrades for now. But I would really appreciate it if anyone had more info on the wiring...

You don't need a fuse/relay box from the donor car. Just the Protege box. I'd say it's a waste of time to wire up the OBDI diag port. OBDI isn't exactly informative, and if you're the kind of person who can swap your engine with the engine from an entirely different car you're probably going to know about the problems before the computer anyway.

Just as a warning, no one that I'm aware of no one has done a swap from FS-DET to KL. You may end up with unexpected complications from the MSP ECU that no one has dealt with yet. I don't think you will have any problems, but as a heads up if I were you I might think about finding an ECU from a sedan just in case something strange happens.

You're going to need the tech book on your donor car (the one you take the ECU and harness from) and for your MSP. If you can get the harness from a mazda car rather than a probe it will help somewhat because the wire colors will be more similar. If you have a 93 KL you're going to NEED a 93 distributor. Don't ask me why but others have had problems trying to use distributors from other years, something is funky with the 93. I can't think of anything else ATM but the best thread is probably Slotege's on the forums here. Very detailed and also talks about the wiring needed for the OBDI setup you're using.

A lot of the other guys who have done the swap weren't as detailed.

Ok first, the wiring harness: You can use a mx6/626/mx3 harness or the probe harness. With the probe the wires have some differences in colors. This issue can be resolved by just grabbing a wiring diagram manual for the year probe you use.

Also, if you are using a 93 or 94 wiring harness you can use the 93 or 94 distributor. The issue comes from the 95 distributor and anything newer than that is OBDII and wont work.

As for the fuse box: you only need to run the protege fuse box, there isnt really anything needed in the v6 cars fuse box for the swap. and the junction box stays the protege one as well

Diagnostics Port: Mine is wired up and working. You can run the wire from the v6 ecu to the protege cluster's CEL wire and you will have a working obdI diag system.

I dont know about your tight timeline for buying and planning, I don't think that is the right way to go about it. However, just be sure to do it right the first time. Dont cheap out on too much and try and get OEM parts where you can. Also, I recommend AWR mounts at least front and rear. Also, they make a tranny saver bracket for the v6

As for the "No one has done a FS-DET to v6 swap" is untrue.

My thread linked above is pretty complete. There are a lot of pages, but most of the info needed on the swap ihas been added to the first few posts. I am currently working on a website to grab everyones KL protege swap information and combined it into one location.

for the ecu but the rest of swap is identical to any other swap done. I didnt think u meant just the wiring portion, but he boosted which is going to require something other than the stock KL ecu just like the mx6/626/probe/mx3

Thanks for the info for the fuse boxes!! I got a wiring harness, disibutor, and ecu from a 94 GT off one of the members on here, I will deffinatly have to run the signal wire to the cel! I never thought about that... I printed off complete wiring diagrams at work for both vehicles so having a ford harness shouldn't screw with me too much. The only thing I couldn't find was a diagram for the ignition cylinder of the msp. I need to know what wires are what so if you guys know where I could find that info that would be great. Well my timeline keeps getting blown apart, but I have 14 weeks untill I have to have the car running problem free, so hopefully I can get this pulled together somewhat soon to work the bugs out. Thanks for the help guys!
