So I'm planning on painting my RX8 wheels black sometime in a week or so (before VIR). I'm debating between Gloss black or Matte black. What kind of paint should I get and where can I find it?

I've never painted wheels before, plus I suck at any kind of painting.

Is anyone here really good at doing wheels? Would anyone like to help me? I'll bring over a 6-pack of your choice (drinks)

best thing IMO is to get wheel paint. That stuff is pretty durable. The prep and other work isn't necessarily difficult... just time consuming. I'm sure we could probably set up a paint booth in the basement again. I want to do my MSM's again.

If you're planning on doing it inside, I'd highly recommend setting up some serious ventilation and respirators. My uncle painted a box in his basement a few months ago and screwed up his lungs big time. He really regretted it.

gloss black engine enamel....this is the paint I used on my wheels, so I would assume the same glossiness as you saw on my green wheels

or get dupli-color wheel coating spray

and don't forget to sand good, clean em, tape em off, primer, and paint... I'd buy two cans primer and three cans color. good luck!

Matte is more flat. Look for Satin Black for a combo. Emblems are kinda a pain due to the coating. For the wheels... yeah, 80 to scuff them up for primer is good. A higher grit for wet sands in between coats are good too.

Satin black is kind of in between flat and gloss. Satin would look good.
i believe Matte is just another term for flat

I did not clear coat mine. I have never had a good experience with clear coat, but that is a personal problem...

id suggest using the Duplicolor wheel paint as its very durable

heres how to prep for the Duplicolor wheel paint:
1. 300 grit sand paper, sand the entire wheel (nothing too crazy just make sure everything is scuffed up)
2. then wash sanded wheels with warm soapy water, let them dry thoroughly
3. once totally dry, take a deck of poker cards and stick between the tire and the wheel (only applicable if your painting the wheels with tires still on them)
4. start spraying... plan on 4-6 coats of paint with around 20 mins between coats
5. then hit em with the clear coat... plan 3-4 coats and waiting about 20 mins between coats
6. let them sit for atleast 24 hours before installing on car

I'll go get some sand paper and start sanding away. The wheels probably won't be on my car until we're at VIR since I don't see the roads drying up enough to run summer tires anytime soon lol.

I agree, we should definitely setup a weekend soon (before VIR)...I'm typically free Saturdays and Sundays. This is of course assuming LMS is ok with this and open on the weekends LOL

Not to be a prick, but I'd rather not paint wheels in the basement again, especially 3-4 sets. I need to paint a set of the GodFathers wheels too. But our house stank like fumes for a couple days and that was with the basement windows open.

I would offer my work place but it would most definitely have to be a weekend since the paint fumes would stink up the shop...

It's nearly impossible to paint wheels during the winter. Not to be a Deddie Downer...

If you guys want to, I can see if we can use the shop some saturday for painting?

And Evan, I would say paint them gloss black. I've painted lots of wheels in my day and matte/flat black just looks dirty. Trevor has gloss black RX8 wheels and they look great.

edit- Honestly, I think the best plan is to wait until spring when it's warmer out and we can have a wheel painting party. No fumes to deal with when painting outside.

Good, I didn't want to ****** do it anyway. I was just going along with the spirit of volunteering "Lewis Motorsports" for anything anyone needs, and wanted to volunteer before you did so that it didn't look like I didn't care about anyone.

I'm perfectly fine with not painting anything until... July to be honest. Hahaha. I bloody hate cleaning up after that s***. Hell, the basement floor in the laundry area is going to need repainted before we leave anyway. There's a fuckton of bronze tint all over the floor.
