If your trying to test your alternator just take ur car to your local parts store and have them test it. The have a lil box that will test your alt. Batt. And starter. Mine was done at autozone
Don't disconnect the battery while the vehicle is running, you'll get a voltage spike and risk damaging your electronic crap.
As for why, alternators on their own cannot generate current. It uses the load from the battery to create a field to affect the stator (copper wires) and generate electricity. At least thats my understanding.

That's correct. The battery acts as a big capacitor to both power the stator and smooth out the noisy power delivered by the alternator.
The service manual has a procedure to test the alternator (page 01-17-04). It involves connecting an amp meter (capable of measuring up to 120Amps!) between the alternator and the battery and measuring how much current it's providing at certain engine speeds with a specific set of accessories turned on.

The battery light will come on if your battery is bad... Swing by a Wal-Mart and pick up one of their Energizer batteries. One of my favorite wet-cell batteries out there. Or, if you wanna spend a little more, you can't go wrong with an Odyssey or an Optima (if Optima floats your boat)

Either the replacement alternator is bad or you didn't do something right. Do you have a multimeter? Check the output voltage of the altimeter, it should be around 14 volts.
My moms vibe has beenn through a battery and an alt. And the battery ligh has never come on it threw a code causing the ce light to come on for the alternator
