Switch it to manual and try it out.

I would say pick a long stretch of railing or fence, place an object alongside of it that you can focus on, go to one end and set up right next to the fence, pick a large aperture, and shoot away on auto then manual. See if they're different

Actually, I just thought of something...

In that second pic you mayyyyyyy have gotten the autofocus set, and THEN maybe some motion occured. Especially using a larger aperture, a slight movement after focus has been set will give the slightest blur. Maybe your equipment is fine

I <3 this pic. In fact, I sent you a PM about it...

yep, you could have leaned into the picture by an inch or 2 and thrown them out of focus. Likewise, they could have moved, and gone off the plane too.

The input is appreciated.

That was all taken in "one shot"... so, I suppose thats at least plausible. Would you suggest changing focus modes for something like that, or no?

I hope its that simple... well, I'm both a little embarassed, and hope its that simple. I guess thats the best way to put it, because a LOT of what I shot appears to have that same softness.

Omg...doing a wedding was the worst experience I've had with a camera. I was overly nervous

I didn't know whether I should set the focus on auto with aperture priority (auto shutter speed) just to have something move and get slightly out of focus, or manual focus with the same aperture priority and possibly still having a focus problem. I wanted to be as artistic as possible, but at least the proper parts of the pic had to be in focus

And I'm not speedy at camera settings. I like to take my time and get things right, then play with exposures by doing multiple shots without moving the camera

In the end I just decided to prioritize the subject's focus, and worry about the artsy stuff later with photoshop. Ill never do a wedding again
