Calling all MS3 Owners with smoking Turbos...

Talked to the service manager today about bringing the car in Tuesday. Told him the problem and that I'd need a loaner because it would take them awhile. He said, "Yeah, we'll get you car. We're used to this." LOL

weird my service manager said it would take no longer than 1-2 days!!
but at least its covered!!1

They couldn't recreate the smoking, but they pulled the turbo off and found a leak, so they're replacing it under warranty! Should have my baby back on Thursday. I am really impressed with their work and attitude. YAY!

Found a leak? A leak? Does not make sense. Sounds like the stealer dealer is just making work. I would bet good money that your turbo will, sooner or later, "smoke" again. It goes with almost all make and model turbo cars with high boost, high compression ratio, high crankcase pressure engines.

where are you located?

Colorado Springs.

They said the seals were bad and they found oil leaking that was causing the smoke.

OK, got her back today. They also found/fixed a coolant leak for me, all under warranty. WHew!

heey man i got mine on thursday but they didnt tell me how to drive or anything but people were saying its a good idea to not go over 4k rpms??

I got a GReddy catch-can installed but the smoking didn't stop at all. I drained it after a few months and got quite a lot of crap, though. I found some other catch cans that are openable with a paper filter in it (kinda like a coffee pot). Is there a way to do the same "filter" concept to my sealed GReddy catch can?

Hi I have a 2008 ms3 with cobb catted dp and forge bypass valve. started smoking back in NOV. when I added the DP. Took it to mazda w/mods it sat for over a week and then the mazda rep declined the repair and then branded my vehicle and voided all future warrenty repairs.. this is against the law the parts did not cause the seals to leak. I filed complaints with the BBB and the FTC. Has the delear done this to anyone else denying the repair? Its a B**** to return it back to stock.

You removed the OEM cats and installed the COBB DP, so that voided the emissions warranty, along with the powertrain warranty.

Warrenty law states that the aftermarket part has to directly affect the failure of the part that needs to be replaced. The Better Buisness Bureau is doing an investigation. Has any one bought that $25 dollar PCV fix from PT-performance? Does it actually work or is it just false hope?

I have it. I put it in when I put the DP on. I had no smoke before and I haven't had smoke since...for what that data point is worth. 08 car, about 16,000 miles.

smoking at idle - my story

So I have had continuous problems with my car smoking at idle with bluish smoke.

Bought my car in May 07. For about a year it was fine then it started smoking at idle. I took my car to the dealer with about 27k miles on it and they replaced the whole turbo. My invoice says the newer turbo kit was used (L3Y1-13-70ZB). For about year this new turbo was OK. Then I started noticing smoke at idle. I sit in traffic about every day so I am at idle or near idle alot. It got so bad that it would start smoking after only 45 sec at stopped idle after the car warmed up. Last month I took it back to the dealer with about 52k miles on it. The dealer was sort of short with me and told me I better have all my oil change records, which I did. So he recreated the smoking with no problem and talked to mazda central. They told him (I am only relying what he told me they said) that he should switch me from the 5W-30 natural oil to 5W-40 synthetic oil and that may work. They also said they mazda was preparing a bulletin that will be released soon and that may be related to my problem. Well, the oil change worked for about 200 miles and it is now smoking again about as bad as it was 2 months ago - so that fix was short lived.

I am calling again today. I am a bit worried they are just stalling til I hit the 60k mile drivetrain warranty expiration.

Any suggestions WRT to working with the dealer so that I get a fix that works long term?

advice:

Re:oil change records. Mazda is requiring you have each receipt for oil and or filter dated and with the mileage. If any of that is missing they won't warrenty the part. That being said it all depends on the Mazda Rep that they talk with. Our just happened to be a real duche. Plus If you read the back of your MS3 warrenty in your manual the turbo is covered under emissions & years 75,000 miles. So If you are bone stock they have to warranty it because it is becming an eviormental issue. Eventually it will turn into a recall.

I installed the pcv fix today from pt-performance...It did not work for me one bit, but thats just my experience.

The pcv pill is not an instant fix. It will not remove any excess oil currently misplaced. It is supposed to prevent further excess oil. Once the oil that's there now burns up it should stop smoking.
That's how it's supposed to work, anyway.

Just was searching the net and found this thread. I have had the EXACT same thing happen to my ms3. 1st turbo replaced middle 08 with about 25k miles on it. Now with 60151 miles it starts again. Dealer did the synthetic thing which worked for 20 miles then started again. I think they will replace the turbo i was just wondering if anyone knew if they are replaceing the turbo with a better model.
