buying a protege, unsure the engine size

this protege is 2000 Protege ES (as per the detailing on door near the front of the car)
this protege has/is air conditioning, a CD player, a standard, 4-cylinder twincam, 4-door.
this protege does not have cruise control or a tachometer.

what's the size of the engine? i have a picture of the engine uploaded. i have a feeling it's the 1.6L but some websites are telling me it's the 2.0L.

thanks everyone!

Looks like the 1.8l, a few of the ES' in 2000 had the 1.8. Check on the underside of the hood, and there should be a drive belt diagram, this will show you the size. If not, and you cannot read the engine code on the side of the block, have the parts dept at the dealership run the VIN.

That is not a 1.8 or 2.0l the 99-00 Proteges came with 1.6 in the DX/LX package, the ES came with the 1.8l. Take a picture of the front seats and I can tell you if it is an ES with a 1.6 place in it.

i had a 1.6, thats it, the 1.8's and 2.0's had a different MAF sensor than the 1.6.Plus the 1.8 and 2.0's look completely different...1.6

yeah it's coming from newfoundland, was driven right by the sea for the last 3 years, the underneath is good though, surprisingly.

heres some more pictures. you can tell the engine size by the seats? (boom03)

I'd say get a legit 1.8L ES. I had one and loved it!

i can't be picky, this is the only one i could find around for such a reasonable price

the trim level can be determined by the seats.. and the trim level also determins if the right engine is in it, or if its been swapped. Looks to me like that is NOT and ES.

the mf date is 09/99 maybe this is a 1999 ES?

so if it is a 2000 ES i'm getting ripped off?

If it were a 1999, it would have been manufactured in 1998 - auto makers always list their models a year advanced as a marketing ploy, E.g. you'll start to see 2011 models advertised within the next few months. Its not an ES either way - the ES had power everything, nicer seats, better stereo and a slightly up-rated suspension/brakes.

is it possible to put p/w or p/l in this thing? what about cruise? i have a stereo i'm going to put in and i might buy a tach at wally world and velcroe that to the dash or something. wheres the ecm in this thing btw? i'm assuming this is a 2000 Mazda Protege LX

another little problem, theres a bit of a hesitation with the gas. when we give it gas it makes a big dip as if it were going to die then roars, dad thought the timing was off but it doesnt backfire. he also thinks it might be running a little rich, could it be the idle air control sensor?

body on this thing is perfect in my opinion, i looked underneath, not overly rusty, the engine has power besides for that problem and even seems to go away when the thing warms up. it's been sitting since last summer on gravel too.

possible, but not really worth it. if you're buying a car, buy what you want.

don't buy a car thats in poor condition, doesn't run well, and isn't what you want. its just foolish.
