What have you done to your P5 today?

he said the rpms would be the same at highway speeds lol
ive ridden in a MS3 and even in 6th gear its still at around 3k when going 60-65 which is about where my car is at

Seems that all Mazdas run high rpms @ highway speeds. Still don't get bad gas mileage tho, its weird...

rpms dont really control gas mileage, i mean they do but i think the main thing that controls mpg is the load on the engine
like whenever im cruising at highway speeds i try to get to the speed where i get the lowest vac. and its normally around 58-60
at 50 the vac is normally at 10inHG and at 58-60 its at 20inHG

i was surprised that i got that mileage i was expecting worse due to the rpm, if i couldn't do a transmission, i thought a higher tire might bring them down a little, but i'm not sure it would make that much of a difference.

rpm speed has a pretty strong correlation to engine load...

Yes, but lugging an engine at 2000 rpm can net you worse mileage than not straining the engine at 3000. For example... climbing a hill. Usually when manufacturers design a transmission, they put the highway crusing RPM near the peak of the torque curve, that way you theoretically don't have to down shift to pass someone, or climb hills, or whatever may come at you.

i can be at 2500rpm with NO load on the engine at all going 40 in 4th and as soon as i step on it, the gauge goes to boost almost immediately

...not really sure where i was goin with that, i have no idea what im saying lol

edit: ok here we go, i remembered, im at 2500 in boost but then im at 3000 at 20inHG
im clearly using more gas at 2500 in boost then 3000 in vac, so its not really that dependent on rpms

Agreed, I was thinking more black & white terms. Like 6k rpm going WOT, vs cruising @2500. (lol2)

Many aspects affect fuel consumption.

Yeah but after having it for a week or two I've realized I never crank up my radio, so I never really use it. I might put up a FS thread on here but shipping would be a big pain.

just curiosity, does anyone know if there is a bolt in 6-speed transmission for the P5?
If not, then has anyone ever gone from a 50/16 tire up to a 60/16 tire, and did this make a difference in your RPM's on the highway? ie: were they higher then usual, or lower then usual, and by roughly how much?
i'm just trying to find a way to bring my RPM down on the highway, if i could do that my mileage would be amazing right now it is 12.6km/l i'm not sure if this is good or not for this car, but compared to what i was driving it is a nice change, i don't hear the fill me i'm low alarm going off every time i drive by a gas station

No 6th that I know of, but some company put a different 5th gear that lowered RPM's. The swap wasn't too bad. Some people ran it but never heard much about it. Should be in here somewhere

Dude! idk it is up to you. lol making all that bank from the retro fit thats why! lol

For those wondering what my new drop and crappy wheels looked like:

I'll get new pics later today when I get my 17's back.

I admit, I was really digging the black on yellow look again once I got these wheels, but they need too much money and time put into them to get back to decent shape.

Very nice matt, I'm gonna add you to the slammed thread

LOL

For reals though, looks great. You need something besides bland silver wheels ;)

I really am low now, I think it's about a coke can of space between the ground and my Home Depot lip, and it will go slightly lower when I go back to the 17's because of the smaller diameter.

But it's crazy how much more attention you get after lowering your car, I get eyeballed all the time now. A guy in a modded G35 even gave my car a look over.
