2003 Protege 2.0 making a turbo sound

After they swapped the IM? You need to tell us that (if i have it right).

Take it back - i would suspect a vacuum leak.

The car made the noise before they replaced the intake manifold and it still does it even after they replaced it. Any other suggestions? and if it was a vaccuum leak where should i start and how do i determine a vacuum leak.

also any suggestions why my car shifts kind of hard when going into 2nd and 3rd but 1st gear is pretty smooth. My car is automatic. 2003 Mazda Protege ES 2.0l Autostick

THIS IS A PIC OF ENGINE BAY CAN YOU TELL IF THIS IS TURBO OR NOT. IM JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY MY CAR IS MAKING A NOISE LIKE ITS TURBO

MAYBE there is a SUPERChARGER hiding in there some where? JK

Did somebody put one of those spiral tornado P.O.S. things in your intake? Forgot what they are actually called. Check for that.

Its not the radio i know that for sure. and there is no tornado disk in my intake manifold. Any other ideas? lately i have realized that my car has been losing alot of power and dont seem to be as strong as it use to be any ideas if this noise is linked to the loss of power. Any ideas would be great.
Thanks

Once again........ it comes down to checking for an exhaust leak. Your manifold may be leaking...... exhaust pipe somewhere along the body may be leaking.

The only thing that sounds like a turbos whoosh/whirling noise is the hissing of an exhaust leak. can also cause you loss of power feel.

I'm telling you... get some seafoam and do half of a dixie cup sucked into the car........ the ONLY place you should see smoke from the seafoam is the exaust exits.

If you find smoke coming from under the car or out of the engine bay, you have a leak.

That noise that you're hearing is the engine. It's going to s*** soon. The person or dealership you bought it from sold you a crap protege. I Bet The Previous owner did not take care of the car and it wasn't maintained and maintenance well at all. Same thing happened to my Previous car. Oil was never changed and it bend a rod bearing inside or manifold or something like that.

It was making the same noise under heavy acceleration. That Turbo and whistle supercharged sound. Dealership replaced my engine. I had the full 100,000 mile coverage warranty. Glad i did!

If i were you, I'd go 2 the dealership and have them buy the lemon back. GL

put the car on a lift and get under it, check the shield that is attached to the pipe just before the cat-converter, its a small thin piece of metal plate that is either for blocking debris or heat (not sure what heat), my car made a similar noise under acceleration, this was because the bolt holding the front of the plate up rusted off, and once the engine reached enough RPM it caused it to vibrate. if it wiggles around then that could be your problem, if so just rip it off, cured my problem. Had a similar problem when I put a short shifter in, the long heat shield above the exhaust rubbed the shift linkage and had to be bent back a little.

I really dont think its the engine going bad. the engine is pretty solid and sound really clean with no knocks or tics but i am wondering can a bad catalytic converter make this noise? My catalytic converter smells like rotton eggs.

what way should i use the seafoam to find out about a leak in the exhaust?
thanks

There's 3 different ways listed on the can, most people perform the brake booster vac line method.

Also try the blocker/heat plate suggested.

If it smells like eggs coming from the back of your exhaust. That indeed means you need a new Catalytic converter. But that doesn't mean it will solve the Turbo whistling noise problem.

If you think the engine is fine and the previous owner took very good care and kept up with the maintenance. You wouldn't be having this problem. Believe me, Your engine will crap soon on you. Time will tell, mine did the same thing

hey my car does makes the same noise on heavy acceleration even with my old motor i used to hear the same noise coming from the passenger side.

Check the exhaust manifold. A bolt might be sheered. My car was making a similar noise until I found and replaced that...

I think that noise is coming form the stock intake.. my car make a noise close to what you guys describe. but after reading what some of you guys suggested it could be indeed an exhaust leak since right now I have a CEL and the posible cause is Bad Cat, exhaust leak, vac leak, or mis fire).

I the car doesnt smeel like rotten eggs..so I think its not the cat. I will try the Sea foam and see if I see any smoke coming form the engine bay.

i dont get any whistling noise but i do here like a blow off valve sound, and i know for sure my car isnt turbo. anybody have any ideas on that? ive checked, no vacuum leaks and havent pulled the egr valve and cleaned it yet but thats what im leaning towards.
