17" Wheels on '08 MS3

My stock MS3 tires are wearin' down... aaand it's time to get new tires. I'm considering a few options but all of them end with me needing new wider 18" wheels. Well. Has anyone had any experiences with 17s on a MS3? How does it look? I'm considering these Rota Lites with the Dunlop Star Specs. They are excellent looking wheels but, I just don't know how they'd look on the car for right now prior to me doing suspension. Any thoughts? I want to do the Star Specs either way but I don't believe I can with the stock wheels.

17's look ok if lowered IMO. Lots of people Run 17's for snow tires, but if you are at stock height, they will look small. Here's a pic of my 17's vs 18's

Why would you even think of running 17s when you're already rolling on 18s? I would have thought that the logical upgrade would have been to go up to 19s if you weren't just going to replace the stock tires that came on the MS. In my opinion, 17s are the perfect size for the Proteges, but would look small on the 3s, even if the car was lowered.

Because I want the wider tires. Currently my stock 18s are only 7 inches wide and I have zero grip. I want to get the Star Specs and they have 'em 8 inches wide for 17s along with 18s, but that (I think) would be too wide to put on 7 inch wide wheels. Most aftermarket 18s that I've been looking at have been either too expensive or I don't like them since I'm really picky about wheels and plus, the 17s would be alot lighter.

I'd recommend finding a set of RX8's before going smaller for the sake of going wider. RX8s look excellent on a 3.

That's exactly what I was thinking about but they're still pretty pricey.. but maybe I just need to look harder. I'm seeing them for like $200 or so a piece, if I was going to pay that much I may as well get some Rota Torques 18s.

I got mine from a guy on RX8Forums, think I only paid $500 and they had tires on them...not great tires mind you, but they were there. Check Craigslist, Ebay, RX8Forums, and even all the generic Mazda forums. You'll find some, and you'll LOVE how your car looks with them.

I'm running a 17x9 +42 Rota on my ms3. I don't think it looks *terrible* but the car does need a drop. Keep in mind that the stock 3 hatch/sedan were only 17" wheels, and they look very respectable, at least IMO.

Now for the fun stuff- Why did I do it? I made the decision after deciding what I wanted to do, and that was stuff as much tire as possible under the car. I was willing to sacrifice a little bit of look for the sum total of a wider tire. I also happened to lose some weight on the deal (only 18lbs/rim) so that was a bonus. The wheels were also cheaper than purchasing a set of 18" wheels, at least new, and the tires are going to be cheaper. I also will have to worry less about rolling my fenders, at least until the Konis and Eibachs arrive. All in all a good idea.

Now the bad part- You have less wheel choice. 17" wheels seem to be restricted to mostly 7.5" widths, which was not enough to satisfy my needs. I needed at LEAST an 8" wheel..... because I was fully intent on a 245, and possibly a 255. This restricted me a GREAT deal when it came to style/color/offset. Most of the wheels I saw that were an 8" were like a +50 offset, and that REALLY kind of bothered me. I didn't want to go that high due to concerns of rubbing on the inside. I can roll and pull fenders, I cannot move my suspension. Took me a solid 6 months of searching for wheels, and at LEAST two dozen sets of potentials before I bought the Rotas. I juggled numbers until I was nearly banned from a local club (but I'm a mod there, so really, they couldn't have done much to me) and the solution was- go wider. This allowed me to get into a lower offset, and push the rim further out. Sure, I'm closer to the suspension than I'd really like, but not as close as if I were to run say a 245 on an 8" at a +50. All in all, it was a giant pain in the ass.

That being said, I say do whatever makes you happy. If you're concerned with performance, go with a 17", the weight savings and cost effectiveness are a blessing. If you're more on the looks, an 18" is going to be your horse. DON'T go 19", because tires are retarded expensive, and limited as hell. If you go bigger, well, good luck to you.

Yeah. I of course would not be doing the 19" wheels, that just doesn't even make any sense.

I'm sort of getting sold on the RX8 wheels, they're the exact width I'd like them to be and staying 18". If I were to go the 17" route, I think I'd have to settle with 7.5" and get 8" wide tires on it. I'm also pretty picky with wheels and most the 17s that I've liked are 7.5... I really don't know why there aren't more that are 8" wide.. it's a common width!

Look at a Mz3. They have 17" wheels.

Trust me, I spent many a night cursing the wheel gods about not making a 17x8. Rx8's are always a good choice though. And I've seen 245's on em (in person) with a little rubbage, the fenders need some work to make it happen.

RPF1s love to built as 17x9s for our car.

Looks up tigermack... i dont know if hes on here, but on m3f

where are you located? There are multiple sets of RX8 wheels for 400 or less on 8club right now. If you are patient you should be able to find a set local unless you are in North Pole Alaska or some other out of the way place.

I ended up buying the RX-8 wheels off the guy in the RX-8 forums. Going to pair 'em up with a set of 225s 8in wide Z1 Star Specs! I can't wait!

I'm over in northeast Ohio. I was able to get a guy from the RX8 club to sell me a set for $400 shipped.
