Extended warranty

Go back and search this board for a long discussion on this. AAA and others offer competitive rates. 25K is typically the over/under threshold so it may be a bit higher for you at this point

My view on ext warranty has been that "it is a personal financial decision to make."
If one can live with the worst case scenario w/o getting into financial shock in an unlikely event of needing a new transmission or transfer case or MFD (multi-func display) (all those cost upward or $3000 or more), then you should bet on the chance.
Because, statistically, one loses money buying ext warranty. That is only statistically.
Since you have bought your CX9, statistics mean nothing to you now because you picked one already.
Ask yourself, "can I handle a $3000 unexpected charge out of the blue?"
If yes, forget about ext warranty. You will win out statistically.
If no, then, go shop for a best deal.
I started a thread here (search for it) and another on at edmunds.com.
I believe the best deal is for about 7yr/100K for around $1500-1700. The best
grade of coverage from Mazda.
Rememeber that the powertran coverage is 5yr/60K. Transmission and transfer case are both covered under it. The MFD, however, is covered by B-to-B coverage, which is 3yr/36K. An ext. warranty typically take care of 50% of cost of all repairs. Most things that are wear and tear by nature are not covered. Ext warranty is not B-to-B. Don't get confused by it. Things like suspension components, bearing, fan belts, bulbs (inc dash backlight), coolant hoses, are not covered.
You have 3yr/36K to decide on ext warranty. No need to rush it now unless you find a unbelievable deal that may not exist any longer....

I second Ceric. I was going to get an extended warranty for our 2008 Saturn Vue UNTIL I read a couple articles like this:

One of the problems is that they are not really regulated. They are neither a manufacturer's "warranty" or insurance.(bang) Try a search on "consumer auto extended warranty" and it will be eye opening - - some of the articles are much more blistering than "polite" Consumer Reports especially on coverage.

They are neither a manufacturer's "warranty" or insurance.(bang) Try a search on "consumer auto extended warranty" and it will be eye opening - - some of the articles are much more blistering than "polite" Consumer Reports especially on coverage.
I think it is the electrical and electronic parts they really cost you in the long.
While a 'drive system' and it's components might go out (transaxle, tranny, water pump, etc.) typically it is control modules and electric motors and actuators that have a problem earlier on.
Imagine if the GPS goes out...or even power seats. There is a lot to say for getting extended coverage but only if you plan to keep the car for several years.
But get the factory extension warranty, not a 3rd party, and shop it across different dealers for the lowest price.
One way to recover some of the cost is if you sell your car to a private party later on. Any kind of coverage on a used car should help sell it faster. But it's a personal choice, base it on your planned usage, etc.
