I can attest to that. I'm in West Haven today doing a DOT job...my job is to literally count how many truck loads of concrete leaves the site.

Oh hell yeah! Me too!
Today I was 3.5 hours late (my boss' fault)...8 hour day.
Yesterday I got in at 9:30am and left at 2:30 (with an hour-long lunch)...8 hour day.
The day before that I (and everyone else at the office) stayed home due to the "blizzard" and "worked from home" lmao....8 hour day.
Paid by the hour or Salary? Either way it's win-win situation. Obviously with being in the Navy, I'm on a salary. That just means I try to duck out as early as I can. As long as the work is done, no one can gripe about me leaving early.
But yes... Working half days and getting paid for full is a great thing.

Travel for 18 hours... 8 hour day.
Best job ever is the civilian counterpart to my job. When they go underway with us, they get paid for an 18 hr day and typically work however long they feel like it. Plus they get bonus pay for being out to sea with us.

By the hour. I'm not actually employed by the state, I work for a private environmental consulting company...but 80%+ of our work is state/city/town projects so it's close enough.

lol. Most jobs I go on we make the client pay for us to come out there (because otherwise they're not going to get our services)...so when I drive to a job site I get $0.50 per mile on top of my hourly pay.
Countless times I'll drive an hour to a job, work for 5 hours..take lunch (yes we bill that time too (evil))...and drive back an hour...8 hour day + ~$75 for mileage (estimate).
