Help picking exhaust

Well, I just ordered the Vibrant exhaust and theres no going back because its shipped already. Protege Garage is fast! I was going for maximum gains in power. Also another question is do I need to upgrade anything else or is it just a bolt on

my only recomendation for you when installing the exhaust is order up a set of corksport polyurethane exhaust hangers or your nice new exhaust may be vibrating off your frame

Since you already ordered the hangars you should be good to go. Be aware with the Vibrant you have to extend the 02 sensor, but everything needed will be included in the box and it can be done without much work.

I have the Vibrant as well and have never heard a complaint about it, other than the rattling which the hangars will take care of.

Thanks for the help guys!. How do you like your exhaust in terms of performance ? It will be a few months until I can put it on and its going to kill me. I will have an exhaust and a CAI in my basement just begging to be installed lol

Well I never dyno'ed my car and I had hard pipes, SMIC upgrade, and the Vibrant installed all at the same time so it's hard to prove which piece gave the most power but I can assure you the exhaust did simply by eliminating almost the entire stock system (which is very restrictive). Only thing left in the way is the S-pipe but unless you get some motor mounts or inserts I would suggest leaving that alone or it may possibly crack your exhaust.

Would I need the inserts or motor amounts regardless? because Corksport suggested getting those if you bought the 80 mm exhaust.

Well the S-pipe I was referring to was Corksport, so they probably recommend upgraded mounts for all of their exhaust components just to cover their ass. It is not guaranteed that something will break without them, but I would definitely recommend buying some if you insist on replacing the S-pipe. Keep in mind if your car is a daily driver (like mine), installing stiffer mounts will give you more vibrations in the cabin. Most people will say that it is very minimal, but I prefer to stay away from those kind of mods that will affect the ride quality.

honestly I have the medium Durometer mounts and i get a little rattle when im letting off the clutch but I can stop it from hardly radling at all and you cant even sell after you get out of first gear shifting or cruising down the highway.

(iagree)

I've got stiffer mounts and the way I see it the stock sub makes more of a rattle when the bass hits then the mounts!!! LOL
and
The wheel hop that the mounts prevent is way more a violent shake then the mounts make as well.

Am I reading something wrong? I thought that the Vibrant exhaust included a S-Pipe?

How long have you had your Vibrant for? You've had no problems without mounts?

If you're looking for more gains for minimal money, I would look into a CustomMSP (that's the name of it) SMIC or a FMIC. The stock SMIC is a turd and VERY restrictive. Dyno gains with a CAI and exhaust are said to be around 20whp...

FWIW, I have a Vibrant exhaust too and I love it. No issues what so ever, except it hangs down a little low. Careful running over stuff.

The Vibrant replaces the entire exhaust system EXCEPT for the S-pipe. A lot of websites call it a turbo back exhaust, but that is not so.

I've had the vibrant for about 6 months I think. No I have not had any problems with the factory mounts relating to the exhaust. I'm sure they are not the greatest, but it does not affect the Vibrant system. It's aftermarket S-pipe's that you need to be careful with.

Oh and Jeff: I don't know if your rear suspension is affecting the height your exhaust hangs from the ground or not, but when I got the Vibrant installed I actually had issues with the muffler and tip touching the underside of the car, so we had to bend the heat shields a little bit and the hangars as well so it did not rub. It fits nice and snug now.

as far as all that piping diamter vs hp talk, check out this chart from corky bell's book "maximum boost"

http://www.koracing.net/img/ExhaustSizeChart.jpg

I disagree with that chart, that might work for a NA motor, but for turbo the best exhaust is NO EXHAUST, that's if the stuff coming out of the turbo would just dissipate magically.

Best bet is to get a exhaust shop to make you a 3" turbo back, its around 900$ on average.

Although that chart does seem conservative, the whole book 'Maximum Boost' is all about turbocharging. Corky Bell probably knows more about turbocharging than most of the companies making the exhaust systems for street cars.

That chart is just a small portion of the 'exhaust' chapter in the book. Where he talks about the importance of keeping the exhaust gas velocity high and not to get caught in 'the larger the better' mentality. It's not necessarily 'no exhaust' is the best exhaust it's no back pressure is the best exhaust (although all exhaust have some back pressure). The book is very informative and if you get a chance it's worth reading.

I've been hearing more and more about cars with custom 4" exhaust systems now lol. yea it looks pretty retarded.
