Kia plans Toyobaru rival

Kias 2008 Kee coupe concept could be turned into a compact, rear-driven, affordable production sports car using recycled platform technology from Hyundais Genesis Coupe.

Whats more, Schreyer would back the adoption of a rear-driven platform, even though it could make the Kee more costly to manufacture.
The next two years are about replacing and renewing our current line up of core models, he said. Before the end of 2011 we will launch an all-new Picanto, a replacement for the Rio and a new Magentis.

These are naturally our priorities because they are proven volume sellers. And the problem with Kee is that no one not in Europe, the USA or Korea can say with confidence what numbers the Kee would sell in.

We are not like Audi or Porsche. We are not in a position to just create something and then announce to the market that its the perfect kind of sports car.
Schreyer also told Autocar that Kias Korean executive management board is habitually conservative and pragmatic. meaning that, unlike Lexus with the IS-F, Kia would never invest in a sports car before a watertight and profitable business case was made.

When youre making cars like this, its important to make them with a great deal of confidence, he went on. So I think the Kia brand has to grow a little more in stature before the time will be right for Kee.

Assuming Kias European fortunes continue to improve at the rate they are now, we could be ready in, say, five years for a car like Kee. We could spin it off the Ceed or Magentis platform, but for me, it would be important for the Kee to be rear-wheel drive. And there is, of course, already a rear-driven platform within the Hyundai-Kia group that we could look to use, if our timing was good.

We would have to aim to rival the Mazda MX-5 and Toyotas new rear-driven coupe. The car would not need to be very fast or very powerful, but it should be compact, affordable and fun a true sports car.
Personally, I have to say that Im very excited by the idea, and very enthusiastic to make it happen.
In an exclusive interview Kia design director Peter Schreyer told Autocar that the Kee wasnt in the European product plan for the next two years, but also confirmed that he is very keen to bring added strength and desirability to the Kia brand with such a car.

what about the nerdy guy leaning against the wheel?
he look suspicious to me...

nah, he just looks like hes happy to be in the star light and the other guy looks like he lost a bet or somehing. He doesn't look to pleased to be in the picture with the other guys and was forced to pose or something. Well at least thats my story of the picture damn it! lol(encourage

I'm interested to see how many of these little RWD coupes make it past one production cycle. There's a reason all of these RWD coupes left the market a while back: A RWD coupe just isn't practical for most people, and many of the people who could drive one can't afford to spend $25k+ on a new car. Given the choice between an AWD 5-door WRX and a RWD 2-door 240SX/Toyobaru/Genesis/Kee/whatever else, especially in WI, I'm going with the practical choice that's every bit as fast and then some. YMMV

True, but price them to compete with something like the Scion tC and you could have a viable product.

yeah I think they were drinking diesel that night.....lol

I like it! Well the idea anyways. There are a few things that need and would be different of course. The whole hood line would be different on the production car. As it is, I dont see how it could open. But I think its good.

What I like the most is the business plan. Kia is doing it right. They only build what they know will sell. They know that in order to build a cheap car they need to market it to the younger crowds the most. And its doing well. Kia and Hyundai are still growing while most of the big companies are falling.

Looks like they got a bunch of rope light from K-mart and glued it on the front. Pure fail. (puke)

No it doesn't you're blind. The LED's are well placed in the concept car and it gets people to stop and look, plus LED's in headlamps is exclusive to lux cars. If Kia does put LED's in their lights it might cause other companies to rethink their light set up.

Ummm.... yeeeeaaahhh....

drop that 2.0T engine into that lil beast, RWD and keep it under 3000lbs :) winner!

Also keep in mind it's radical design...it's a concept...it'll be smoothed out and have input by focus groups as to the styling...so dont get your panties in a bunch over the current look
