Any Way to Limit Boost for Daily Driveability?

Not being a smartass but why did you buy a turbocharged car if you don't want to boost? I commute 80 miles a day with a heavy foot and still manage to get an average of 24-25mpg. It's pretty easy to drive this car without boosting if you want to attain better mileage... (cheers2)

If not said already, OP can get an inexpensive vacuum/boost gauge and tee it into his BPV vacuum line. Then it's simple -- for high mileage watch the gauge and stay out of the boost as much as possible. Old school, simple and cheap.

It'll verify the common sense on when and where the boost comes in and help him learn what to do with the right foot when he's trying to squeeze out some extra mileage. And all the power is still there when he needs to pull out and pass the Prius in front of him that keeps getting in the way.

Like the title states, is there any way of limiting the boost through the use of a boost controller to run, lets say 12 psi instead of 15.6? Just wondering...

of course there is. but my tuner says again and again, it's your right foot that is the problem!

Economy mode requiring minimum 91 octane fuel. Low boost, increased ignition timing, & leaner fuel curve for optimal fuel savings. Not a performance map and not recommended for aggressive driving.

if you arent getting good enough gas mileage based on reg driving style with a "normal" tune....switching to an economy mode would be foolish. i think economy mode is a dangerous thing to use with a lot less gain than just controlling your foot. if you were going to control anything change your throttle position in your atr so you cant go past 60%....or better yet set a rpm limit so you cant go over 3500 rpm or something. boost will automatically be limited and you would force to learn to drive conserative.

i just say go buy a pos that gets mad gas mileage. idk....i drive mine safe but play as well.....gas mileage doesnt matter to me until im driving 30 miles with my gas light on trying to get to a shell station. lol.

the easiest and cheapest way to modify your boost level is recalibrating your right foot.

I have flat feet,mainly on the right, that army doc said so, and I have the papers right here your honor. thats why I always have a flat throttle

main reason I am tempted to buy one

after 3 weeks they actually responded to an email with a response to my Q
1-5 mpg

bosses kid has an rx-8 with AP. gets 6 better with the eco map

I'd pay for it in 26 mos at 2.70 for gas

but the $400 fee for oopsies keeps me out

yes, running lean with boost is the worst thing you can do. get on it even slightly, build a few psi @ 15 AFR and boom. Only good for long highway drives and even then its not much of a gain in mpg. I get 32mpg highway with my protune. maybe 1 or 2 more on the econo map. not worth it imo

I figured the economy map just kept you from boosting. Not so much leaning out under load
That is the fuel sucker. The Boost. Turn the boost down to 4-6lbs. Not much fun but...maybe some better mileage.

cant turn the boost that low. IIRC the mechanical spring in the wastegate is 7lbs, so you basically cant max out any lower than that. Also if you ever look at the afrs when you build boost, they drop into the 12s or lower depending on how hard your foot is on the pedal. Ive noticed in the economy map this doesnt happen as quickly. soo.....boost + high afr = massive kr or detonation

like i stated before....if you really want to avoid boost you can find a good solid rpm to set your lc at so you cant go beyond it. i say if you drive highway and dont want to waste fuel set your rpm at like 3200 rpm and you wont ever boost past like 5 psi because you cant even come close to the rpm range needed to get good boost. idk....its a lot easier to just control your foot like 85738473 people said already. if you cant...well, learn to.

I wouldn't set my RPM limiter that low. What if you got in a situation like you needed the speed?

Turning left and "one of those vehicles you didn't see" starts coming and suddenly you can't accelerate. It sounds like a safety issue to me.

Cut a chunk off your right foot to reduce weight.

never said it was a good idea...i think econo mode is also a bad idea. i think anything to alter the vehicle in any way to save on gas are bad ideas. lol. if you want to save on gas, keep it stock, and drive slow. taadaa
