KYB GR2 Struts/Shocks

I've blown a strut on my Mz3. At first I was looking at the Koni FSD's but they are hella expensive. Since all my modding money is now earmarked for the bike, I checked out the KYB GR2's.

They appear to be decent, which is all I'm looking for. The car is just transportation, although I do plan to pair them with Racing Beat springs. I am a little concerned that although there is an application to fit my car, TireRack doesn't have it. I plan on calling them tomorrow, but was wondering if there was some reason why I shouldn't get them.

KYB GR2s are meant to be OEM replacements and should not be lowered on. And even as an OEM replacement, they are, at best, somewhat below average quality dampers. But if you just want something cheap that will work and not care about how it handles or rides then go for it.

the GR2s are actually for the *normal* 3
unless they have AGX's, I wouldn't put any KYB on a ms3

recommended aftermarket struts??

If Gr-2s are the basic oem replacement then what struts would someone recommend to be lowered on? that isn't gonna kill my wallet. tokico hps r bout 90-100 a pop but is there another option out there around that price??

the tokicos will be the cheapest ones to get if you want to just lower your car

Thanks for the responses. I'm putting them on a NA (not speedy) 3. I am also getting the Racing Beat springs, which will only drop the car about 1/2", so I'm hoping they will be fine. My neighbor, who rallies his WRX uses them on his rally car, so I'm hoping they don't suck too badly, and work with the RB springs.

well i had the gr-2s on my ford zx2 and it was lowered....i had no problems with them. i was dropped about 1.50-1.75..... if i remember correctly, they were shorter than my stockers....but that's a totally different car so take it with a grain of salt.....

1) you shouldn't have posted in the ms3 section
2) racing beat doesn't make anything for anything BUT mazda!

The KYB GR-2 is made as an OEM replacement, but I have talked to a KYB rep and they said you can run them with up to a 1.5" lowering spring. I wouldn't even consider them for my MS3, but I just picked up a set of GR-2's, upgraded swaybar, and a set of H&R OE sport springs (lowers approximately .75" front/.5" rear) for my wife's 03' Honda Accord to replace the current stock suspension. I would have gone with Tokico's but nothing was available for my model Accord. I'm sure the KYB's will be at least as good as if not better than what came on that Accord.

I have them along with lowered springs on my 2 other cars. So much for the "statement" they should not be used on lowered cars. They definitely handle better than most stock struts/shocks and provide a good feel for the money. A good choice for when you don't want to break the bank.
