1.6L FTW

Hey,

I am most likely going to buy a 1991 miata in the next few weeks. Ive been doing some research about turboing it and have read that the 1.6L have been known to crankwalk? Is this true? Is the engine good for boost or do people blow them up frequently?

What needs to be done to the greddy kit to make it reliable?

What fuel modifications do I need to do? Fuel pump, injectors ect.

Do I need an EMS?

Thanks,

Matt

The 1.6 does not have crank walk. The known "issue" is that of the short nose crank failure. Though, "issue" is subjective in my opinion as it relates to improper maintenance. Observe proper torque ratings and it'll be fine.

1.6L + boost = good. One of the inital applications of this engine was forced induction (see: 323GTX)

The Greddy kit is reliable. However, reliable is a function of proper tune.

EMS is ideal, though with a RRFPR and upgraded fuel pump, you'll be OK.

A simple 250lph Walboro Pump and 330cc injectors out of turbo supra (2nd gen) will get you fueled properly. Add a Megasquirt + MAF delete for ECU tune and you will have a nice setup up to 8psi. Grab front mount and you can crank that badboy up as high as the turbo can go. At 14psi on the 1.6 with a good tune and FMIC, you can hit 210-225whp.
