Radar Detector?

If you dont want to shell out the big bucks for the V1 or the 9500/8500 the Beltronics i940 is practically the exact same thing as the Escort 8500 but only $165 or so. I even used the 8500 hard wiring kit so I dont have cords in the way. Works fairly well but I dont speed all too much. Use it more for situation awareness.

Escort/Passport is the same thing from my understanding. I had a Passport 6500 (or maybe 8500) for a little while back in the day. I got it for free basically, squashed a $50 debt for it from friend of mine when I was 17. lol Pretty sure it was stolen, but **** it. It worked well and they are effective to a point. Then my car got broken into while out downtown one night.

Just go the speed limit. If you speed just don't be a dumbass and go 80, not 100. The radar detector doesn't save you & everyone else from excessive speed. All it takes is that one grandma/16 year old/mom in a suburban to cut you off without knowing/looking and you are getting your car and your buddy riding shotgun pulled out of the telephone pole you got wrapped around.

You have to remember, people aren't expecting a car going 100mph to be coming by them, and they don't plan or understand to look far enough back to see this.

The only thing I really want a radar detector for 3 situations.

1) For is those occasional times I want to go 80 on the highway. I don't do that often anymore because it keeps my mpg down.

2) The only times I have been gotten a ticket for speeding is when I didn't realize I was. A little beep in the cabin to get my focus to my speedometer would have been nice in those situations. I have only ever gotten two tickets.

3) Once in a great while I like to really put my foot down. I won't say how fast but we all know what the MS3 is capable of. I have only done this twice, only for about a mile or so. It was flat, straight, and dry. Guard rails on both sides of the highway and no one in front of me or behind me as far as I could see. I knew the road well, knew where the cops like to hide. I don't do this often, and don't plan on making a habit out of it for a number of reasons, but on rare occasions its nice to put the MS3 through its paces.

Exactly my thoughts. I just want to enjoy my MS3 every now and then...

Well, everyone seems to agree V1 is the best, but if I had that kind of money, I would upgrade my TMIC first. (lol)

Anyway, I hear you guys: go big or go home. :D Thanks.

I'm always over the speed limit lol. Cops don't scare me nor the fines. What scares me the most is those six hours straight on the computer in traffic school removing that point from my record lol. Only gotten one ticket but from a stop light camera. Thats why I chose the Beltronics GX65 radar detector. Keep your eyes open and know where the hot spots are and you shouldn't come across to much trouble. But know the consequences before you speed. Yeah I said it lol.

i think a lot of it depends on where, and how you drive.

when blasting around the back roads, no one in sight...or in the dark... that is when having one can really come in handy... if they are sitting reading the paper, with the gun pointed down the road, but out of sight (they LOVE doing that). or even when they are coming towards you (i slow down for ALL oncoming traffic) then you will always pick them up way down the road.....

around town, service road laser guys sitting in the u-turns? sneak attack un-marked cars in traffic with instant-on? street racing on the urban freeways? no thanks... i keep it cool in town.

i really should make a video of the drive out to mom and pop's...

i have been driving for 13 years and no speeding tickets so far... well, had one but went to traffic school. ONLY one. :) other tickets were like parking, didnt stop on the red signal light, expired license plate, no bumper, headlights gone, etc... sigh...

As for it adding situational awareness...I don't really understand that...it detects radar and laser signitures[sic] not unseen road hazards or idiot drivers on the road. If anything it is more of a distraction when the thing beeps and you go looking for a cop nearby and not the road ahead.

Just my .02.

Try reading for comprehension next time. What I actually said was:

"...a radar detector is merely one tool to help you avoid tickets. Situational awareness, common sense, a basic knowledge of LEO strategy, and the strengths and weaknesses of the various speed measuring equipment/techniques are even more important factors."(emphasis added)

In the past 20 years I've only received two very minor speeding tickets(78 in a 65, 92 in a 65)- and both times it was due to a lapse in situational awareness.

If you end up getting a V1 make sure to look up how to put it on "preferred" mode. This disables X band and premutes K band unless its over 5 strength. it amazin'

And make sure you actually mount it so its horizontal as opposed to at a 45 degree angle *cough *cough haha. Unless cops hide in trees where your from...

radar detectors are honestly feel good tools.

BS.

I drive all over the place everyday for my job. I use a Escort 8500, has saved me many times over. Not one ticket to date, and like I said I drive everyday, all day, and have been for the last 3.5-4 yrs. You have to spend the money on a good detector or you're just throwing money away. V1, 8500, BEL STi, or nothing.

My take on this is that its stupid.

If you haven't ever though about it they are called speed "LIMITS".
"Not we suggest you drive this speed, but its ok to go over it if you want to"

These limits are set for a reason, however much you may dislike or hate the fact that they are the certain speed, thats the law.

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Most speed limits in place today are based on vehicle facts from the 1950's, when cars could not handle the higher speeds, had tires that could blow at any moment, not all had power steering, stability control, etc etc. The Govt' chooses not to do new studies to change the speed limits, too much revenue involved. Go do some research before making blindly stupid blanket statements like this.

Don't you know about the eye in the sky?

Actually the higher end models can detect radar from above in their normal position.

Any good detector will not be affected by being angled slightly up. They don't shoot straight only... LOL this is why you don't buy cobras. /end

Some people think spending $50 is good enough for what they want. Others think spending $400 is best for what they want. If you have only ever had ground beef (and spent $5 for it) then the thought of buying a T-bone steak (for $20) would be a rip off. Both are meat, both fill you up but why spend another $15 for the steak when the ground beef gets the 'job done' for less?

I've got a V1, have had it for 4 years and it has payed for itself many times over. Regardless of what radar dectector you get, you still need to be awake while driving.

If you've never had a T-bone steak and only had ground beef, then you never know what you're missing.

I suppose the same could be said for our constitution....
