Good ways to quiet turbo after installing Cobb SRI?

Guys,

I have an '09 MS3 with a Cobb SRI. I love the power advantage over the stock intake (especially after putting the stock one back on for a day or 2 to take the car to the dealership), but i really do not like how LOUD the turbo spool up and blow off is. It is really the spool up that bothers me, its extremely loud and slightly embarrassing when i have people riding in the car and i give it any gas at all.

Does anyone have suggestions on ways to lower the turbo noise without denting performance?

The sound is generated from the intake. All aftermarket intakes make that sound. Your options are learn to live with it or put the stock intake back on.

you could always add some extra sound deadening on the firewall and floor boards. I am not sure how much that will eliminate, but I am sure it would help atleast a little.

Is this serious.... The sounds of a turbo engine are among the sexiest things on earth. I am at a loss for words here... Sell it, just sell the car. Clearly it is not for you. I cant tell you how many peoplw out there put intakes and new BPVs on this ONLY because they want to hear the turbo. s*** some people run VTA blow offs and lose power just to hear the sound. To be embarressed about the sound of a performance car with turbo noise is shameful.

I guess maybe I could understand if you were carrying coworkers or other non-car savy individuals. Best bet is to put the stock airbox back on then unfortunately. Or purchase the Mazdaspeed CAI. I have had the Injen, Cobb SRI and now the Mazdaspeed CAI and its, by far, the quietest of the bunch. Injen was loudest, Cobb was 2nd then the MS CAI.

I didn't mean to offend anyone. I understand that lots of people like it, and i do as well, just not under mild acceleration.

I'll look into potentially getting the MS CAI then :o Thanks!

mazda engineers spent some time on this and came up with a lightweight plastic device which attaches to the acordian hose

not really nessacary...

Anywho, I think that all of you guys need to back off a bit here. So he doesn't like the loud suction sound, who cares? Different people like different things. Some like quiet performance while others don't....get over it and give him some ideas on how he can quiet it down.

(usa) I salute you sir!

If you pack the turbo and intake pipe with sound deadening insulation it works like a charm...

But in all seriousness, Corksport is working on a cold air box for the Cobb SRI so when that comes out that will probably limit the noise a bit.

Really? Interesting...

I'm not a huge fan of the sucking sounds either but it's actually better than what I imagined before installing it. Under WOT, the sound is great but the part throttle wooshing gets old pretty quick.

I've been looking into a CAB (like the one from Corksport) myself to maybe reduce some of these noises. Either that or get a CAI which may be better.

Wait for the CAB, but until then, installed the OEM intake or get better at staying out of boost by not stepping on the gas so much. Its very possible to drive the car and stay out of boost. Just rev higher at every shift.

Just go back to the stock air box. It was designed to do exactly what you want (minus the performance gains).

This is basically how i feel about the sound. Its amazingly loud at part throttle. I'll look into the CAB... sound like exactly what i need.

Also, i love sound from cars. My friend's stock S2000 + K&N CAI is AMAZING sounding - it's really quite intoxicating. I just do'nt want the loud whooshing sucking noise when i'm not really accelerating quickly. I have to say, though, my MPG has increased due to my awareness of turbo spool ups.

MSCAI or AEM CAI are both good solutions. (Pretty much the same product). I'm of the school of wanting to be seen (getting smaller as I pull away) rather than being heard.

Both are true cold air intakes that at least theoretically should perform better in the summer months than a SRI, and do put down good numbers on the dyno, and they do a better job of isolating the sound by being located up under the left front fenderwell behind your left headlight.

You will still hear some "whoosh" even at light to moderate throttle positions, but it is very much more subdued.
