Calling all MS3 Owners with smoking Turbos...

Powertrain goes out to 60K. At least mine does, and the Turbo is part of that.

Mine would smoke occasionally. Mostly when sitting at idle. Found oil on the intake side of the intercooler and took it in. New Turbo, under warranty and 54000 miles on the odo.

Is your car bone stock?

Yes I figured the tail out on that thing was rear wheel all day. The Carrera S 4 is all wheel drive. And i nosed one out before the snow fell. Just a arrogant Dr. and poor driver with a poor attitude so i had to bring him down a peg. So how off track am i... If the turbo is bad its bad. If you overheat one you will do damage whether it is water cooled or not. Warm up and cool down is good practice i think and I really believe that most of these smokers are a manufacturing issue. I have not read everything but i have been watching this for a while. I am at about 34-35k and i bet mine goes all smoky as soon as the warranty is up. My luck. If it breaks, upgrade. My motor wants a bigger blow dryer any ways.

not to change the subject on how sick porsches are but my turbo just started blowing more smoke than a fat chick on 50 cent beer night. I have 32K on it full CS tbe, MS CAI, and it was running cobb stage 2 till that happened. brought it to the dealer reflashed it to stock. They said they would be hearing back from mazda today if it was warranty or not. am i ******? or is there a chance my wallet wont get ***** for a GT28

If you seriously have to come out of your own pocket for a replacement turbo, just get one of the Garretts. The K04 hates aftermarket downpipes.

Did you bring it in with all the bolt ons? If so, imo its gonna cost you a warranty and a turbo. If they don't warranty it, call up PG and get a rebuilt one for cheaper than a GT.

Lots of people claim it's in the pcv system. Add a catch can and add two supra tt pcv valves to your pcv. If it still smokes you know it's the turbo. Some have said they smoke even after a PG turbo... so is it the turbo or the pcv? I'd say cover all your basses

say what now? lol you lost me

Some people think the smoke is from a deficiency in the pcv system. Add a catch can and the smoke might stop or be reduced. Although expensive, I've never heard of anyone regretting buying crank vents.... but instead of buying them, get two supra tt pcv valves and install where the crank vents would go.

Even some people with PG turbos have reported smoking, and people with turbos replaced by mazda... and I mean immediately or within like a thousand miles. If it's not the turbo its gotta be the pcv system.

Well said. And where is the basis for the earlier post that our K04 does not like dp/rp? Mine loves it. The only "smoke" I get is black soot from being over rich when I go WOT after sitting at idle.

Those of you who think you have oil coming out the exhaust, try this: Take your finger and wipe the inside of the exhaust tip and feel it. It's probably likely to be dry black exhaust soot. Excessively rich running turbos do that.

I'm not saying that the original poster is not burining oil, maybe he is, maybe not. If so, perhaps he can hook up the catch can first before he gets all crossed up with the dealer about his mods and their effect on warranty.

08 ms3 "hence the sig lol" 23700 just installed catless testpipe the other day and just got home tonight and it was smoking like a b****.... i was dreading this day.

Gonna put the stock cat on remove my intake and take her to the dealer :(

Maybe a bit if over reaction? The dealer will mess with your engine, probably put a brand new turbo in, probably for no good reason. Think about it: it was not smoking before the TP, right? Now it's "smoking." The cats do a good job of burining off much of the fumes that come back into the intake from the crankcase through the PCV valve. You took one of those cats out.

My guess is that if you leave everything the same but just put the second cat back in and give it a few days to do its thing, your "smoking" will go away.

If it does go away, you sure don't need the dealership messing with your engine and putting in a turbo that is not needed.

If putting the second cat back in the system cures your problem, then you can go back to the TP with no real fear of harm. If the "smoke" continues to bother you, put in an oil catch can and enjoy your car.

i Just installed my catted cpe downpipe on sat and i noticed that when my car is just sitting there ideling its smokes not too much but when i start going it goes away!? should i be concerned?

Could be residue on the inside of the pipes from shipping/production. Every exhaust part I have installed has smoked for the first day or two and then stopped. See in a few days if it goes away

yeah thats what a couple of buddies were telling me!! but thanks anyway ill keep you guys posted if it continues or gets worse.. :)

Has anyone with a smoking problem done this yet? It also reccomended by Cobb Tuning in one of their technical documents(got to page 3): http://www.accessecu.com/accessport/mazda/AP-MAZ-02/MS3-MS6 Service Bulletin v1.02.pdf

I'm still sitting on my brand new TurboXS DP and this kindof makes feel better about going thru with the intall, but I'd still like to hear if anyone's got any experience here....

Couldn't you just quote the relevant text instead of requiring us to look at a 2.85MB PDF to figure out what you're asking?

I presume you're referring to the catch can setup? Several people have here with positive results.
