Buying a MS3, good price?

I was offered the invoice on an '09 GT, which was 23,930 w/o options. I requested a different color not on lot, and was told he'd tack on another 100 or so to get it in. I imagine this is before any taxes. I'm a first time car buyer, so do you think I can get lower than this? Only went to one dealer, should also consider shopping around but would like any additional info. Thanks.

if it's invoice and it's the real invoice price (double check. dealers lie.) then it's good. the $100 for something not on the lot doesn't seem too out of line. you could probably fight to get that eliminated but it may not be worth it since it's only $100 and if they're easy to deal with then that's easily worth $100 to me. the biggest thing to watch out for after deciding on price is the after the sale stuff they try to sell you or automatically tack on. all you should see on your invoice is car amount, destination, tax amount, registration fees, and that's it. any doc fees or advertising fees or anything like that you shouldn't have to pay. also things like extended warranties and other various protection programs usually aren't worth it.

I can assure you that's a good price. Be sure to check the odometer and ensure it has less than 10 miles on the clock. You may be able to haggle a bit lower, but only amounts to a few dollars less on your car payment.

The auto industry is not doing well, and the 2010 model is coming out soon. Mazda needs to unload all their old 08 and 08.5 inventory. No way in hell you should settle for such a high price. Seriously, go to another dealer. Also remember, 08 is worth less than an 09 significantly.

What the hell is the tax in your state? I got mine for 20995 before tax, after tax over 23000. Hey there metro gray buddy :).

Tax in MA is 5% but I also had a trade in so technically I only paid tax on the value of the car after trade in. The dealer also offered me $500 more for my trade so it really was a killer deal. Sales guy was happy to get a sale too.

Should be able to take another $500 from this price but not much more.

So I imagine it'd be unreasonable to get it $24k OTD, right? 6% sales tax on 23,930 equates to $1,453. Maybe I could settle on $25k OTD?

Don't settle, the new Mazda3's arehitting showrooms slowly so there's no reason you should have to settle. If you don't get the price you want then leave, there's nothing that says you have to take their price. Usually when you start to pack it up they call back day after day offering a bit lower price or more incentives/add ons the longer you wait.

If you don't get the price you should get, walk. Usually they throw in more stuff.

22.5k should get you a sport, i think out the door for 23k or about 23.5 with TTL and all that crap is ok, i guess. ... i got mine for less, but i really worked on them, i did a good bit of research... and wasn't going to pay what they wanted for the car, simple as that. and i got the 100k warranty as well.. i had a good down payment, a good trade in (oh yeah, they gave me good money for that, or i would have kept it), perfect credit, etc. etc. and i'm a bit older... and i tell them about the car, not the other way around. hehehehe... no no no.. this isn't a 2.5, guy, it's a 2.3... no no no, it doesn't make 20lbs of boost stock... can i talk to your sales manager, please?

actually took many trips to the dealer(s) i went to to finally get a deal i was happy with... be an ass... tell them to make money on the next guy, or your going to (insert name of other dealer or make of car here) down the road, where they want to sell you a (other favorite car), that you really like better... and there are things you don't like about the speed3 (in other words... lie, lie, lie... hell, they are! i consider it a fibbing contest, and i like to win!) i always make them think they are losing the sale.. which they are, as far as i'm concerned...

ask them what they are going to do to keep you from going to (insert name of other dealer or make of car here)? tell them you don't care what the car is worth, you have a budget... and that is that... agree on the price of the car before anything else.. then work terms...

and laugh out loud a lot, and harder when you hear something silly...and say no.. or better yet, OH, HELL NO, THAT'S NOT GONNA FLY.. and NEVER be afraid to just pick up and walk out of there... in fact, you should NEVER buy a car at the first dealer/first test drive... no way!!! don't go in there with the mind set that you are leaving with a car... you are doomed!

you should walk away from the deal at least twice, IMO...and by that i mean.. go home... work on it another day. do this on your next new car purchase, and then tell me what happens. :)

and NO there are no 0% interest deals on this car. i got a much lower rate from a local bank, much lower than mazda would offer... i'm happy with what i paid for mine.... i smile every time i turn the key!

As someone mentioned, don't settle. If it's not the right deal don't go for it.

You might skip the GT and go for the S which you can easily get for 23K OTD.

Like Squidmotion, I also used the technique of another car which I was about to pull the trigger on and someone had suggested the MS3. It made the dealer nervous that I would walk so they were very cooperative when it came to negotiating price. It was the most stress free car buying experience I ever had.

Actually it was true, I was about to buy an 06 Volvo V70 R with CPO for slightly more money but when I drove the MS3 I felt like a kid again and maintained enough restraint to get a good deal.

You're getting a "good deal" with this car even if you pay MSRP, it's a bargin really. Hell the car is only like 25-26k maxed out without hassling the dealer.

No, you don't get a good deal when you pay MSRP on any car. MSRP is what they want, never what you should pay. Even if the car is cheap, MSRP is still a rip off.

It isn't like you're going to get more than 3k off MSRP so to me it's not that big a deal, although I did manage to get my 08 GT for about 2k under sticker. I would've still paid MSRP and felt fine about it considering what I got compared to what the rest of the market had to offer at the time. 30-40 bucks a month isn't going to make or break me, could've afforded a 50k car but I like to have extra money lying around for a rainy day. I guess for those struggling 2-3k is a really big deal, it’s all relative.

I saying relatively speaking considering what you get compared to other cars in the same market.
Sort of, if it were 22K for my car on sticker and 24 for an MS3 then it would be good. 27,500 for a TRD Sport Tacoma Double Cab Short Bed isn't bad either...it should still be 25K MSRP though.

I'm in the market for an MS3 now and I've got an offer for a Grand Touring with no options at $21,300. I'm in the northwestern suburbs of Chicago if it means anything.

Tell them 21K and you got a deal. I'm assuming it's a Sport model? If so...20.5K would be ideal, 21K is good.

Very rough estimates,

25k + tax/license/delivery and whatever
1.5k LoJack system that after the fact, I found out they swindled me on

So it was close to 29k before financing. I put 9k down, financed 20k. 7.69% on that 20k is going to be close to 3-4k.

So what I've financed is close to what people are paying OTD...

I am, however making HUGE (at least to a college student/part time employed) principal payments so I don't lose too much in interest.
My original 20k loan has been cut down to 12.5k within 9 months.
Not too bad, but I should have been in a much better position from the start, but hey, I'm young and this was my first major purchase.
I've learned my lesson and will prepared from here on out.

got a quote from a dealer for a new 08.5 GT (gotta find out how many miles though):

MSRP..........................$25025
Sale Price....................$22495
Less Presidents day bonus $500 good thru today
If deal is complete by today $21995

(obviously the pres day rebate is no longer available now) but i'd figure if they're willing to sell the car for that price on that day they should be willing to sell it on another day as well. or should i try even lower?

I'd be hard pressed not to jump all over that. That's a great deal. Like I said, I got offered invoice on a GT w/ no options, which was 23,930 in CT. Was it a 2009?
