How much should I sell my RX8 for?

Here is my situation. I bought my 2004 RX8 last year at a lower price than most were going for (because it had been in an accident and the title had been branded). I've put money into getting new tires and regular service, etc. from the dealership and had no intention of selling it. The other day, though, the car wouldn't start, and then the mechanic who looked at it couldn't find anything wrong with it. Now it's apparently up and running again and I pick it up tomorrow. Part of me knows that it's stupid to get rid of this vehicle for that reason - it's got about 26,000 miles or so on it, and my carfax report showed it had been in only a slight accident so that probably isn't the reason. However, I'm active duty and a full time student and I don't have time to tinker with a car! How much would you all sell this car for?

Would like to help you, but need a little more info.

It is an 2004, is it an auto or manual transmission?

Also, what trim level is it?

The RX-8's do not like to be started for less than a 5 min run time, could that have been the problem?

i think its silly to sell it because of one problem. if you get that upset with something after 1 little thing, you are going to have a heart attack by the time you're 30.

Thanks for the replies. Haha, yes I am probably overreacting. I'm hearing these cars are a bit finicky and I'm afraid I lack the patience for that. The car was sitting for well over a week (in a cold garage) without being started. Could have something to do with that, but the battery and all that checked out fine. I never run it for under 10 minutes (I've heard what that can cause). The car is a 4dr 6-Spd Manual COUPE.

I could have been nothing more than a fuel or stuck relay problem. I have a 1994 B4000 PU that can be a bear to start up, if I let it set for several days. I think the relay may be getting a little corrosion on it, while it sits. It never fails to start, if we drive it regularly. It could be the car had something like that wrong with it.

I've read the horror stories about the RX-8 not restarting. Our service manager told us to be sure to rev it up before shut down, if we pull it out of the garage to wash it. I've done that a few times, when I could remember it; but, I seldom do. It starts every time. If it ever fails, we have a quick guide in the car to tell us exactly how to restart it. It may have to do with the plugs they use, now, that keeps it from failing. I know our car got the newer plugs before we bought it.

I'd not sell the car just because it failed to start, once. Fixing the problem may be cheaper than buying another car. If you like it, keep it.

So it is a 2004 6 speed base model, with 26k miles, and a salvage title...

If you were to sell it, you could get $8k pretty quick, but if you were not in a hurry, you could probably get as much as $9k.

Shoot, if that's all it's worth, I'd be sure to keep it, then. It sounds like good, cheap transportation, except for the gas mileage, and has good looks to go with it. We don't buy them for good gas mileage, do we.

As for the damage that got it salvaged, it would take a pretty good lick on the car to total it, even at a $8K value. My son ran into that in 2007 with his Mustang that was valued at about $7K. Maybe that has something to do with it. It could be nothing more than a ground wire that isn't making good contact, after the rebuild.

My battery had to be charged today. I hadn't been anywhere for about 12 days. Is that the problem?

He really didn't give a clue as to what it was doing, other than it wouldn't start. A flooded engine won't start. A bad relay can keep it from starting. Of course, a bad battery is a given. Any of these will leave a mechanic scratching his head, if the car starts after that. It has to fail before a mechanic can probe into the problem. It can be most frustrating, to say the least. It's still not grounds for selling the car.

Yep a rotary sitting for a long time. (5 days or more) might have problem starting right. Any rotary car needs to be treated correctly and with extra love lol
