MS3 vs. stage 1 08 STI + Pics

Ok so today I went for a little drive with my buddy in his 08 STI. He's running Cobbs latest stage 1 revision (he was overboosting on the previous version). We drove out to a closed course and did a few quick comparison pulls. My MS3 is bone stock (minus the carseat mod) with 1500 miles on the odometer.

Ok so first pull was second gear and through the end of second he pulled 1/2 car length then once I shifted to 3rd (5800 rpms) he pulled another car length. For reference our gears are almost identical only the STI continues to make power up top where the MS3 falls on its face.

Second was a 3rd gear pull starting at about 2500 rpms. The MS3 began to pull right away, about 1/4 car length (got to love DISI) then up untill I shifted into 4th at 5800 we were dead even. As soon as I shifted the STI began to pull about a car length.

We did a few more passes simlar to the previous with the results proving the same. The MS3 has better low end, low rpm power than the stage 1 STI and subsequently pulls slightly at first. Once the STI was making full torque the acceleration between the two is basically identical. The STI eventually wins with its top end. While my stock power falls flat at about 5800-6k the STI is still in its powerband and pulls each time I shift.

Needless to say I was very impressed with how the MS3 performed bone stock and not even close to being fully broken in. My friend with the STI was equally impressed and loathes the day I begin to modify the MS3. (glare)

While we were out we snapped a few pics. After looking at both cars closely we were amazed at how similar the two were. The roof lines, rear quarter panel, hatch spoiler, headlight arangement, rear wipers, roof antena, side skirts and overall dimensions. Its like twin brothers seperated at birth.

*Disclaimer*
My camera is a fixed lens 5.7-22.9mm which is basically one step above one of those slim cameras so the shots are by no means done with the right type of camera. Excuses aside here you go.

Great story. I love both cars even though I don't like the STi's looks, I love its performance. The price difference between the 2 is more than enough for you to get some mods CAI and maybe exhaust and have him seeing your taillights.

i like the sti wider fender flares and hood scoop, but hate the taillights, wing and rearend

Love the story and the pics. I think its so funny when ms3 owners and sti owners talk s*** about the others and how ugly they are because like you I really think they look very much the same...

Good explanation of the runs. Also, good pics that juxtapose the two cars.

And your dealer is really nice to have given you a license plate frame that says Mazdaspeed! I would just black out the dealer's name.

I'm still a fan of the STI but more of a fan of the MS3. I considered the STI but was ready for something different and the $10k price difference seemed like a no brainer to me.

Still a very cool car and with only a stage 1 reflash is very fast.

im enjoying how you can still differentiate between your exhaust tip and bumper

^ I agree. I kind of wish mazda would have done like the STI and put the larger front fenders, or I hope someone will make them. It would be nice for us autox guys who dont run in a stock class can have a chance:)

If both cars were stock, it'd be dead even or the MS3 would probably have a half car on the STI. But since the STI is Stage 1, it would help it in the top end.

Very nice write up. I love the wheels on his STi. I've seen them on a black one here locally and it's hot as hell.

I really like the STi overall, but the tail lights gotta go.

I'd love to have one, and did consider it, but there's no way I could justify the price over the MS3. Although this time of year here in Ohio AWD would be nice. At least we'd be able use the power we have.
