MS3 Mitsubishi 20G turbo project

I've been looking at upgrading my turbo for the past 3 months but I haven't felt like spending GT series $$$$. I've been trying to find a good/quality turbo that won't cost me an arm and a leg, that can make good power, and serve as a serious upgrade over the stock K04. I started looking @ oem turbos and the evo VIII-IX stood out the most. After some recommendations from my shop I will be upgrading my stock turbo next month to a mitsubishi 20g turbo off a 2.6L starion. I will also be going with a Custom Manifold, (details of the DP fitment will be resolved once the turbo is on the car as well as the inlet and charge pipes). The jig for the turbo manifold will be fabbed up on my car, which leads to the next question would anyone else be interested in a turbo manifold that would fit a 16g/20g turbo, or an entire kit?

I will try to have pictures of the turbo they are going to use up within the next couple of days. I will also post pictures/vids of the progress of their work once everything gets moving. I will also do a dyno of the car after install.

Dont get the evo VIII turbo! The IX is better. Bigger turbo and bigger hotside. I owned an evo and a re-worked IX turbo I think it was called an FP green is a hot item. Look into socalevo.net for ideas...

So, isn't this going to end up costing more (maybe a lot more) than a GT?

No, I'm going to be spending $1400-$1500 and after i sell my stock turbo, I'm looking at $1,000.

BTW, i could have saved $400 by going with a used evoIII turbo but I wanted the potential to make more power and i didnt want to run into any boost creep issues.

Does that include any tuning? How do you plan on controlling boost? Would hate to see an original, interesting project go Boom...

I run a 16G Evo3 on my DSM.

Bigger isn't always better. Big is great for dragracing but for most motorsports which require lifting off the gas, you'll lose time waiting for the turbo to spool up unless you run anti-lag.

The stock 16G Evo3 wastegate spring is set at 10lbs boost. If you want more boost, there are hundreds of aftermarket manual or electronic boost controlers available. I like a dual stage which can be changed from inside the car to conserve gas while tooling around and the ability to turn it up to high setting for a day at the track or occasional Honda wanna-be at a light.

Its good to see someone else going with another turbo other then the GT's. People make really good power on 18g's and 20g's just depends on what you want out of your car. Subd

Lol, I remember using 20g's to upgrade eclipses back in the late 90's. Seems like a step back to put an older technology turbo onto a state of the art car though. Although, if you're on a budget... go for it. They work well on 2.3L stroked 4G63's... so I see no reason it wouldnt work well on an MS3.

i actually have 2 turbo's off a starion that i plan on using to boost my mitsubishi mighty max p/u. i swaped the 2.0 for the 2.6. i still need all the electronics and wires, but everything else is here. do you have anything laying around??
