its for the counterweight. easier shifts.
and its not like the knob is a part that people check out, so it doesnt really matter if there is a hat coverin my knob.

I understand the counter-weight issue, but if you can't hold onto the knob because it's too hot, or too cold most of the time, doesn't that defeat the purpose?
